The original book, published in 1935,
was typical of cocktail books of the
era: devoid of photographs, very
straightforward in its writing style and
full of advertisements from companies
whose participation undoubtedly
financed the publication. “Bar Florida”
gives us a snapshot of the Cuban bar
scene pre-World War II, a scene that
modern day visitors would agree, has
changed very little.
The book is almost entirely bilingual
(English-Spanish), a rarity in the field
of cocktail books from any era, this is a
testament to the American presence in
Cuba in the early part of the 20th century.
Cocktail recipes include classics such as
Manhattans and Martinis, but also more
obscure drinks like Longines, Creole
Mojitos, Paris Midis and Porto Flips.
