Most fans (44.3%) stated they liked “teenage boys, but not kids <strong>in</strong> yaoi,” with the similar response “Shota <strong>in</strong> yaoi<br />

makes me feel uncomfortable” garner<strong>in</strong>g 29.77% <strong>of</strong> votes. 61 Individual typed responses showed that fans could<br />

recognize the difference between the non-normative sex practices <strong>of</strong> rape <strong>and</strong> child pornography as crimes <strong>in</strong> reality<br />

<strong>and</strong> the fantasy, genre-driven rape <strong>and</strong> child pornography <strong>in</strong> yaoi. 62 <strong>Yaoi</strong> may serve to satiate the erotic desires <strong>of</strong><br />

women, <strong>and</strong> while some respondents admitted to be<strong>in</strong>g aroused by rape (24.60%) <strong>and</strong> shota (12.94%) <strong>in</strong> yaoi, the<br />

genre itself is only a part <strong>of</strong> the larger Japanese pornographic preoccupation with rape <strong>and</strong> child porn <strong>and</strong> has<br />

probably had limited s<strong>in</strong>gle impact on the decrease <strong>in</strong> sex crimes. 63<br />

7. Conclusion<br />

Fans <strong>of</strong> yaoi seem to recognize differences <strong>in</strong> fantasy <strong>in</strong> reality with regards to rape <strong>and</strong> child pornography <strong>and</strong> can<br />

identify both <strong>of</strong> these non-normative sex practices as parts <strong>of</strong> the genre’s tradition that serve particular functions <strong>in</strong><br />

plot <strong>and</strong> reader experience. <strong>Rape</strong> <strong>and</strong> child pornography are viewed <strong>and</strong> crim<strong>in</strong>alized differently than <strong>in</strong> the West,<br />

affect<strong>in</strong>g depictions <strong>of</strong> these practices <strong>in</strong> yaoi <strong>and</strong> other Japanese visual media. Further, the many paradoxes <strong>in</strong> yaoi<br />

warp <strong>and</strong> m<strong>in</strong>imize the impact <strong>of</strong> rape <strong>and</strong> child pornography on female readers. <strong>The</strong> prevalence <strong>of</strong> rape <strong>and</strong> child<br />

pornography <strong>in</strong> Japanese pornography may be a contribut<strong>in</strong>g factor to the decrease <strong>in</strong> rape <strong>and</strong> other sex crimes <strong>in</strong><br />

Japan. More research is needed to truly underst<strong>and</strong> why there is such a prevalence <strong>of</strong> rape <strong>and</strong> child pornography <strong>in</strong><br />

Japanese erotic media <strong>and</strong> to what extent erotic anime <strong>and</strong> manga have decreased the sex crime rate or otherwise<br />

curbed a propensity to commit said sex crimes. <strong>The</strong> larger impact <strong>of</strong> harmless view<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> virtual pornography<br />

conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g rape or children also needs exam<strong>in</strong>ation, with particular <strong>in</strong>terest paid to female readership <strong>of</strong> yaoi <strong>and</strong> the<br />

impact <strong>of</strong> rape <strong>and</strong> child porn <strong>in</strong> their view<strong>in</strong>g experience, moral <strong>and</strong> sexual development. <strong>The</strong> overwhelm<strong>in</strong>g<br />

prevalence <strong>of</strong> rape <strong>and</strong> child pornography <strong>in</strong> yaoi is non-normative to Western audiences unfamiliar with Japanese<br />

sexuality, anime, or manga but is a def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g facet <strong>of</strong> a genre that has granted the freedom <strong>of</strong> sexual <strong>and</strong> gender<br />

exploration to women <strong>in</strong>ternationally.<br />
