2008 <strong>IEEE</strong>-<strong>USA</strong> <strong>Program</strong> <strong>Book</strong><br />

Introduction<br />

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers – United States of America (<strong>IEEE</strong>-<strong>USA</strong>) is a major<br />

organizational unit of the <strong>IEEE</strong> that traces its origins to the formation of the <strong>IEEE</strong> U.S. Activities Committee<br />

in 1973. <strong>IEEE</strong>-<strong>USA</strong> was created to advance the public good and promotes the careers and<br />

public policy interests of more than 210,000 engineers, scientists and allied professionals who are<br />

U.S. members of the <strong>IEEE</strong>. <strong>IEEE</strong>-<strong>USA</strong> is led by a volunteer board of directors chaired by the memberelected<br />

<strong>IEEE</strong>-<strong>USA</strong> President. <strong>IEEE</strong>-<strong>USA</strong>’s operations are supported by a professional staff of 22 based<br />

in the <strong>IEEE</strong>-<strong>USA</strong> office in Washington, D.C.<br />

The 2008 <strong>IEEE</strong>-<strong>USA</strong> <strong>Program</strong> <strong>Book</strong> highlights the mission, goals and programs of <strong>IEEE</strong>-<strong>USA</strong>, and<br />

was developed to increase member awareness of the programs and services <strong>IEEE</strong>-<strong>USA</strong> provides to<br />

advance the profession and benefit <strong>IEEE</strong>’s U.S. members. This book also serves as a reference for<br />

members seeking information on specific programs or issues, and those looking for opportunities to<br />

volunteer their time and expertise in support of their profession.<br />
