Join Phoenix Zoo President & C.E.O., Bert Castro, on this exciting South Africa safari! The journey begins with a memorable visit to Cape Town, where highlights will include Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Gardens, the Cape Peninsula (including Boulders Beach, Seal Island, and a funicular trip); touring in the Wine Country; and an optional White Shark Cage Diving adventure! Then, we’ll fly to the Kruger National Park area, and spend two nights each at the Saturday, February 23 - Depart Phoenix This morning we depart Phoenix and fly to our gateway, where we connect with an international, overnight flight destined for South Africa. Sunday, February 24 - Arrive Cape Town Evening arrival at Cape Town International Airport, where we are met and transferred to our hotel for overnight. Winchester Mansions. Monday, February 25 - Cape Town Morning at leisure to rest-up and adjust after the long trip. Late this morning we’ll depart on a tour of the Cape Town area. We’ll begin with lunch, and then proceed to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, acclaimed as one of the great botanic gardens of the world. Few gardens can match the sheer grandeur of the setting of Kirstenbosch, against the eastern slopes of Cape Town’s Table Mountain. Then (weather permitting) we’ll take the cable car up Table Mountain, and gaze down on the city, as we are given an overview of its historical layout. Welcome dinner this evening. (BLD) Tuesday, February 26 - Cape Town (Cape Peninsula Full-Day Excursion) After breakfast, we’ll depart on a full day tour of the Cape Peninsula, including Cape Point and Funicular, Boulders Beach and Seal Island. We admire spectacular scenery as we are driven along the coastline of the Atlantic and through the elegant suburbs of Bantry Bay and Camps Bay, and on to beautiful Hout Bay. The adventure continues with visits to Chapman’s Peak, where we admire the views from the highest point. We’ll also visit Boulders Beach with its Penguin colony, Seal Island, and the Cape Point Nature Reserve, where we’ll visit the Cape of Good Hope, and the Cape Point Lighthouse. Lunch included. (BLD) OUR JOURNEY OUR ITINERARY Bongani Mountain Lodge, located in a private game reserve, and another lodge in Sabi Sands, which is home to the Big Five, along with many other wildlife species! You also have the opportunity to participate in an optional, 3-night extension to Victoria Falls – one of the seven “Natural Wonders of the World.” Wednesday, February 27 - Cape Town - Wine Country - Hermanus After breakfast we depart Cape Town for a full day tour of the Winelands, including two wine tastings at secluded estates, a cheese or chocolate tasting, and a range of cultural and historical attractions. While South Africa’s Winelands region is justifiably well-known for its exceptionally high quality wines, there are also a number of other attractions in this beautiful region. We’ll enjoy lunch along the way. After a scenic day in the Wine Country, we’ll arrive at Hermanus, where we’ll check-in at the Grootbos Private Reserve for dinner and overnight. Grootbos Private Reserve. (BLD) Thursday, February 28 - Hermanus (Optional White Shark Cage Dive Excursion) This morning you’ll have a variety of activities you may choose to engage in. From beach walks, to horseback riding, to trails, the Grootbos Private Reserve offers an abundance of activities. In the afternoon we’ll visit other areas of interest, including the town of Hermanus. Optional White Shark Cage Dive Excursion. For those who are adventuresome, you’ll have the opportunity to participate in an optional excursion to “swim with the sharks!” After an early breakfast you’ll board a boat for a White Shark tour including a Shark Cage Dive. This adventure is ideal for thrill-seekers and nature enthusiasts alike. Guests can experience the excitement of being face to face with a shark, inside the protection of a submerged cage. We’ll also see Dyer Island, with its permanent colony of Cape Fur Seals, and Geyser Island, with its Jackass Penguins. Afternoon return to Hermanus. Friday, March 1 - Hermanus - Cape Town - Bongani Mountain Lodge Early this morning we’ll drive back to Cape Town, and board a flight to Nelspruit. From there we proceed to the Bongani Mountain Lodge. On arrival we’ll have lunch. An afternoon game drive will allow us a first opportunity to see the Big Five! Tucked away in the breathtaking wilderness of Mpumalanga, on the border of the world renowned Kruger National Park, is the enchanting Bongani Mountain Lodge. Here, surrounded by spectacular mountain views, we can unwind in traditional timber and thatch rooms that blend effortlessly into the surrounding landscape. Bongani Mountain Lodge. (BLD) Saturday, March 2 - Bongani Mountain Lodge Today we’ll have the opportunity for a morning game drive, as well as another in the afternoon, which can allow us the opportunity to see even more of the diverse wildlife found here. (BLD) Sunday, March 3 - Bongani Mountain Lodge to Kruger National Park This morning we’ll have the opportunity to experience another early morning Game Drive. Then we’ll depart for the Sabi Sands region, an unfenced area bordering on Kruger National Park. We arrive at the Arathusa Lodge, where we’ll experience an afternoon game drive. Arathusa Lodge. (BLD) Monday, March 4 - Kruger National Park Both morning and afternoon game drives will be scheduled. Between game drives, we’ll have the opportunity to take advantage of the lodge’s swimming pool and other facilities, as well as enjoying lunch. Arathusa Safari Lodge. (BLD) Tuesday, March 5 - Kruger National Park - Johannesburg - Depart South Africa This morning we’ll drive back to Nelspruit airport. Along the way we’ll have lunch. This afternoon we’ll fly to Johannesburg, where we’ll board a connecting flight back to the U.S. (BL) Wednesday, March 6 - Arrive Phoenix Arrival back in the U.S. today. After clearing U.S. Immigration and Customs formalities, we’ll board our flight back to Phoenix. Arrival back in Phoenix today full of lifelong memories of South Africa and its wildlife! (BD) Friday, March 8 - Victoria Falls – Johannesburg – Depart for U.S. Late morning transfer back to the airport.
