cause severe mortalities in larval penaieds (Lightner 1993).<br />

Sirolpidium spp.<br />

This phycomycete fungus has worldwide distribution (Lightner 1993) and has<br />

caused severe mortalities in cultured larval P. vannamei in <strong>Hawaii</strong> (W. Carr, unpubl. data).<br />

Fusarium solani (Mart.) Sacc.<br />

These fungi which are common in the environment worldwide, have been noted in<br />

P. japoncus in <strong>Hawaii</strong> (Lightner 1981). These fungi can cause melanized cuticular lesions<br />

in shrimp.<br />

Protozoa<br />

Peritrich protozoa ( Zoothamnium sp., Epistylis sp.)<br />

These protozoans have been noted as epicommensal organisms of cultured penaeid<br />

shrimp in <strong>Hawaii</strong> (Brock 1992).<br />

Unidentified gregarine<br />

An unidentified gregarine has been noted in Penaeus merguinsus De Man in <strong>Hawaii</strong><br />

(J. Brock, pers. comm., 1995).<br />

Helminths<br />

Trypanocynch tapeworm<br />

The procercoid-pleruocecoid stage of a trypanocynch tapeworm was found encysted<br />

in the hepatopancreas of Penaeus merguinsus in <strong>Hawaii</strong> (J. Brock, pers. comm., 1995).<br />

Other pathogens<br />

Other pathogens that currently have not been documented in <strong>Hawaii</strong>an penaeids but<br />

are likely to appear in the future include: white spot syndrome baculoviruses (WSSV) and<br />

Yellow-head virus (YHV). WSSV has not been reported in <strong>Hawaii</strong>, but this virus has<br />

caused severe mortalities in penaeids in Asia and Texas (D.V. Lightner, pers. comm.).<br />

Similarly, YHV has caused severe mortalities in Thailand but has not been documented in<br />

<strong>Hawaii</strong> (Flegel et al. 1995). Due to the distribution of these pathogens and the frequent<br />

transport of frozen and live shrimp, their introduction into <strong>Hawaii</strong> is likely.<br />
