1 ST /2 ND GRADES JULY 15 – AUGUST 2 18 CLASS DESCRIPTION Sports Clinic: This class will engage your “sports” brain! You will explore and learn about the world of sports from the U.S. and around the world. You may discover sports you never even heard of through reading, video, and playing the sport! You will also learn about famous athletes in a variety of sports and what it takes to be a successful. 1. American Favorites 2. Sports Around the World 3. Famous Athletes Standards: Physical Education, Health STEM: Objects in Motion, Forces at Work! What makes things move? What is a pulley or lever? What does gravity have to do with us and our world? This class will teach you basic principles behind gravity, motion, and simple machines through investigations and experiments. You will create/build simple machines to learn some cool math and science principles that make them work! 1. Locomotion Motion 2. Push and Pull 3. Simple Machines Standards: STEM Quirky Tales and Crazy Characters: Do you love a great story? Are you intrigued by weird characters? This class will sharpen your reading skills with fascinating fiction and amazing non-fiction facts. You will explore crazy characters, mysterious plots, and great story endings. If you are interested in a good reading adventure, this reading class will have you on the edge of your seat! Standards: Reading, Writing Kitchen Chemistry: Science is awesome, food is awesome! Blending the two together can produce magic – or chemistry. In this class you will learn how simple foods can interact to produce chemical reactions and make some cool food. Standards: Science Paper Art: Do you have an “inner artist” just waiting to explore all of the various art forms and design? Do you want to tap your creativity? This art class will focus on paper and its use in art: paper mache, Origami, collage and much more. You will learn how simple materials and some math basics create great art. Standards: Art, Math Macaroni Math: Come look at math a different way using pasta as your tool! This class will teach you basic skills in problem solving, reasoning, and understanding how to prove your math answer. This class will focus in on subtraction and its relationship to addition through the use of interesting objects, the use of pictures to represent subtraction, and problem solving through investigations. Standards: Math Reading Intervention: 1 st Grade 6 Weeks This class is by teacher referral only and will be designed increase reading skills for grade level success. TEACHER REFERRAL ONLY. You will develop your skills in batting, catching, and playing on a team. This class will introduce you to the rules and strategies of this favorite national sport. Standards: Physical Education Spanish Expression: This class/workshop will teach you basic Spanish words and expressions. You will learn about the Spanish culture through speaking, song, food, and traditions. Come explore a different culture and language to learn geographic information about the countries that speak this rich language! 1. Basic Spanish Sight Words 2. Spanish Speaking Countries 3. Spanish Customs/Games/Song Standards: Geography, Social Studies, Language Arts, Foreign Language National Geographic Expeditions: What do you know about geography? What physical features make a certain environment and how do people live there? Come on cool expeditions through National Geographic to explore/learn about our planet and the many different physical features we have. What causes a volcano to erupt? Where do sea monsters live? You will learn fascinating facts about the physical features in our environment. Standards: Social Studies, Geography Creative Expressions: Do you have an “inner artist” that likes to express itself through drama and art? Then, this class is for you! You will tap into your creativity through beginner’s theatre, movement, poetry, and art design. You will learn how to act out a story, create movement to music, and use art to tie all of it together. Standards: Music, Art, Language Arts, Reading “Bug”Ology: Creepy, Crawly Wonders (Repeat of Session I): What do you know about insects? What kinds of insects help us? Where do they live? What do they eat? In this class you will learn about many fascinating bugs and their habitats. You will do investigations, outside discovery, and reading to discover interesting facts about these amazing creatures. 1 ST /2 ND GRADES JULY 15 – AUGUST 2 (CONTINUED) 19 CLASS DESCRIPTION Fizzle Science: Come aboard the Magic School Bus with Mrs. Fizzle! You will explore and learn about slime, goop, and the world of germs through investigations, experiments, and reading. Science is fun and Mrs. Fizzle will show you why. You will build your investigative skills and increase your science knowledge of interesting science topics! Standards: Science, Math, Reading Going On a Treasure Hunt – Geocaching: Come explore geography and technology through geocaching and Google Earth! You will learn how to discover hidden treasures or “caches” outside using a GPS system. While exploring, you will discover the physical features of our area, which you will use with Google Earth to create a virtual treasure hunt. This class will teach you a basic understanding of the Hartland/Wisconsin geographical area, its features, and how to use both a GPS and Google Earth. Standards: Geography, Math, Science Fore!: Come and learn the fundamentals of golf! This class will teach you the terminology associated with golf and you will learn the skills and strategies of a great golfer. Whether you’re planning on learning the game to compete or to relax, golf is a wonderful lifetime sport! What makes an airplane fly, or a car speed? 223 This class will teach you the “mystery” behind basic mechanical systems through reading, experiments, and investigations. You will $10.00 learn the basic math and science concepts behind the mechanics that put things in motion to build some of your own prototypes! Standards: STEM Under Construction: Are you a builder of things? Do you like to see how materials and parts fit together? This class will introduce simple basic engineering concepts through construction labs using simple materials. You will learn how to design, create a plan, and problemsolve to build a variety of items. 1. Designing 2. Tools and Materials 3. Construct and Create Standards: STEM Introduction to the Martial Arts: For people new to the martial arts, the benefits of martial arts training might not be obvious. Some will think, sure, it's a great workout--just look at that "Ty Bo" guy. And of course it's good for self-defense, with all that punching and kicking. But the benefits of martial arts training, especially for children are much more than simple physical improvements. Martial arts benefits span a variety of physical, mental, and social attributes.
