TERMINOLOGY OF<br />

DISCRETE ELEMENTS<br />

In discussing multielement conodont taxa<br />

it is necessary to refer to the discrete elements.<br />

Recently, several systems for naming such<br />

elements have been introduced, but none has<br />

been universally accepted. The apparatuses<br />

discussed here are relatively simple, and cornplex<br />

terminology is unnecessary. Accordingly,<br />

individual elements are described using<br />

adjectives that refer to distinctive morphologic<br />

characters. Examples include unicostate<br />

and bicostate elements <strong>of</strong> LItaltcomis, n. gen.,<br />

and symmetrical and asymmetrical elements<br />

<strong>of</strong> Semiacontiodus Miller.<br />

A special set <strong>of</strong> terms for elements <strong>of</strong> Fryxellodontus<br />
