Pest and Labor Management Focus of South Jersey Fruit Meeting Ms. Allison DeMarree, production economist with Cornell Cooperative Extension will be one of the featured speakers at the South Jersey Fruit Meeting and Labor Conference on Thursday February 20, 1997 at Masso’s Crystal Manor in Glassboro. Ms. DeMarree will use her expertise as a commercial fruit grower and an economist to share new ideas on cutting labor costs and improving management efficiency. Ms. DeMarree is an area specialist in Western New York and also farms 200 acres of tree fruit with her husband. Also featured is Dr. Nancy Fiedler, Associate Professor of Environmental and Community Medicine at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, who will present new information on the health of farmers exposed to long term use of pesticides. Dr. Fiedler, a psychologist, will discuss both the psychological and medical effects of pesticide use by fruit growers in southern New Jersey. Fruit growers are considered intensive pesticide users by Dr. Fiedler and are compared to other farmers who do not use pesticides extensively. Dr. Mark Robson, Executive Director of the Environmental and Occupational Health Institute at Robert Wood Johnson, will also present some interesting case studies on pesticide exposure. The morning session of the all day meeting will be focused on pest management. Specialists from Rutgers Cooperative Extension will give presentations on weed management, root disease control in fruit trees, and an update on new insect management techniques. Dr. Robert Belding, Specialist in tree fruit science with Rutgers Cooperative Extension, will discuss new ways to extend the shelf life of peaches using growth regulators and nutrients. Mr. Dean Polk, Integrated Pest Management agent with Rutgers Cooperative Extension will discuss new techniques employed in pest management for tree fruit in 1996. The meeting is jointly sponsored by Rutgers Cooperative Extension and the New Jersey State Horticultural Society. Pesticide Applicator Recertification Units will be given along with Production Efficiency Grant Credits for Business Management. Information on the meeting can be obtained by contacting Jerome L.
