Research & Creative Activity
“Sideshow Picasso,” a documentary by Marilyn Agrelo about the work of Professor Marie
Roberts, was shown at the Angelika Film Center, NYC, and Laemmle Theater, LA, CA. in
August 2011.
Roberts’ banner art was featured on the cover and inside of the album “For the Good
Times” by The Little Willies with Norah Jones as well as in the music video.
Her art will also be used in the May 2012 release movie MEN IN BLACK III.
Professor Roberts created six illustrations for the short story “Cream of Tomato” by Anne
Chernow to appear in Carrier Pigeon, A Magazine of Fiction, Illustration & Fine Art, Volume
2, Issue 2 (May 2012)
Cannonball Press, published and editioned three of her woodblock prints, “Fire,” “Snakes,”
and “Hyjinx” in Spring 2012.
Professor Roberts contributed work to two benefit exhibitions in NYC, “Postcards from the
Edge” at the Cheim & Reid Gallery in January, and “100 Works on Paper” at the Kentler
International Art Space in April-May 2012.
Adjunct instructor Scott Barnes exhibited his work at over 30 galleries, art centers and
institutes, and other venues throughout the U.S. as well as internationally during 2011-12.
o His photogravure titled “Campsite Quanta” was awarded Best in Show at ARTSPACE
Gallery
o Another photogravure titled “Havasu” was awarded 1 st Place Alternative Photographic
Process and voted People’s Choice in a contest held by Rangefinder Magazine.
o 3 different photogravures were chosen for inclusion in the photo annual Diffusion
Magazine along with an essay titled “Muse”.
o “Toyed With” show at Open Shutter Gallery ran in conjunction with a show by wellknown
National Geographic photographer Steve McCurry

Adjunct instructor Dik F. Liu participated in group exhibitions in Williamsburg, VA; Duxbury,
MA; and Oceanville, NJ. He had a solo show at the Eden Rock Gallery, St. Barthelmy,
French West Indies in May 2012. His work also appears in 100 Boston Painters (Schiffer
Publishing, Ltd., May 28, 2012).
“HAS BEEN,” a teleplay by adjunct instructor James Rana, was a Semi-Finalist at the LA
Comedy Short Film Festival and also ran at the Los Angeles Screenplay Competition and
Moondance International Film Festival.
He has supporting roles in the feature film “THE HOLLOW TREE” starring Brooke Bloom (“CSI
MIAMI”) and Anne Consigny (“THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY”), and is co-starring in
the world premiere play “RANGOON” (May-June) off-broadway at Pan Asian Rep
(www.panasianrep.org).

Rana also wrote, produced, and narrated the radio documentary “GOING POLAR,” a
comedic look at the Coney Island Polar Bear Club, airing May 6 on 89.1fm WFDU and then
to be distributed by NPR. His full-length play, “THE POE MYSTERIES,” will receive its world
premiere at the East Lynne Theatre in Cape May, NJ (July-August) and then transfer to the
Ocean County Professional Theatre in October.
Adjunct instructor Jill Van Nostrand is currently performing in the Broadway shows Wicked,
Mary Poppins and Jesus Christ Superstar.
Adjunct instructor Sunhee Yoon had solo exhibitions at Gallery SoBab and at Gallery MESH,
both in Seoul, Korea, in 2012.
Dr. Zhenbin Sun has had published an article “Reading Korzybski through Nietzsche,” in ETC:
A Review of General Semantic, Vol. 68, No. 4, pp. 414-440 (October 2011). He also
presented a paper, “Three Approaches to the Puzzle of the White Horse: A Critical
Review,” at the International Society for Chinese Philosophy Conference, Paris, July 2011.
Faculty Honors and Awards
Dr. Zhenbin Sun was selected as the 2012 EOF Outstanding Faculty Member of the Year.
Brenda Blackmon, adjunct professor and Co-Anchor, WWOR-TV, My9News, has joined
FDU’s Board of Trustees.
Prof. Tina Alaimo LoPonte was honored at the Multi-Cultural Club Women’s History Month
banquet in appreciation of hard work and dedication to the FDU community.
Student Activities & Accomplishments
Matt Quayle, FDU alumnus, adjunct professor, and CNBC-TV Senior Producer, developed
and taught a graduate course in the MA in Media and Professional Communication
program entitled “How to be a Cable News Producer.” Curriculum included a site visit to
MSNBC studios, including an on air appearance.
The Annual Communication Career Day was held on April 4, 2012, organized by Tina
Alaimo LoPonte. The theme, “Careers in the Media,” included the following Media Panel:

Soccer Blog, New York Times; Eli Amdur, Career Coach, Columnist; Douglas G. O’Brien,

Nwaoko, Student Intern at ABC’s “The Revolution.”
“Discover Media Studies Day” was hosted by Tina Alaimo LoPonte in November.
Prospective students were given a hands-on journalism lesson, toured the radio station and
the TV studio, and heard from current students about course offerings and internship
opportunities.
Thirty-five new students were inducted into the Communication Honors Society in 2011-
2012. The Society is advised by Tina Alaimo LoPonte.

Internships by Communication students under the advisement of Dr. Zhenbin Sun were
obtained throughout the metropolitan NYC area, including at Fox5 News, MTV
Networks/Viacom, Bella Public Relations, By Any Means LCC., FDU Athletic Department,
Michael Kors, ABC’s “The Revolution,” and “The People’s Court.”
30 students attended a taping of “The Martha Stewart Show” and of “The Anderson
Cooper Show” as part of classes taught by Tina Alaimo LoPonte and adjunct instructor
Maureen Vanacore.
GILDART HAASE SCHOOL OF COMPUTER SCIENCES AND ENGINEERING (GHSCSE)
Accreditation and Other External Recognitions
The B.S. Electrical Engineering program has been reaccredited by EAC-ABET until 2017.
During the exit meeting of the site visit, the EAC-ABET team praised the program’s outcome
assessment as the best they have ever seen throughout their many accreditation visits.
The M.S. in Electronic Commerce program, developed by Dr. Zwass, has been recognized
as one of the Top 100 Master programs in the world by Eduniversal Master’s Ranking.
Extramural Grants and Contracts
GHSCSE has received a generous donation of $27,261, including $8,000 for scholarships,
from the Mechnical Contractors Association of New Jersey (MCANJ) to support the B.S.
Mechanical Engineering Technology Program in AY 2011-2012. This raises the total
donation received from MCANJ to $364,043 over nine years.
Drs. Farag and Casti received a $6,000 award from the Mathematical Association of
America’s Tensor SUMMA Program for their proposal to add a Mathematics component to
GHSCSE’s highly successful Technical Enrichment and Outreach Program (TEOP). This grant
will fund a seven-week Saturday program to introduce applications of Mathematics to 20
students from area high schools.
The Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) has awarded GHSCSE a grant of
$11,000 to work on two projects this academic year, raising the total grant received from
NAWCAD to $49,500 in the last three years. The NAWCAD/FDU partnership, established in
2010, provides GHSCSE students and faculty the opportunity to work with U.S. Navy
engineers on engineering and scientific issues related to naval aviation. Prof. Lewis serves
as overall supervisor for the projects. Dr. Mondal, Dr. Lefkowitz, and Mr. Schaeffer advise
students working on the projects.
Outreach
GHSCSE has been conducting the Technical Enrichment and Outreach Program (TEOP) for
35 to 50 high school students every semester, twelve Saturdays per semester, for a total of
13 semesters, involving eight school districts. The program has received a grant of $15,000
from Verizon this academic year, raising the total donation received to date to $240,000.
Past donors have included the Toyota USA Foundation, General Electric, John Victor
Machiga Foundation, ExxonMobil Foundation, Paterson School District, PSE&G, SONY, and

BAE Systems, as well as a $1 million endowment gift from Dr. Gregory Olsen, FDU alumnus,
trustee, and benefactor.
GHSCSE faculty members have been mentoring three to eight Bergen County Academies
seniors who intern at FDU every Wednesday since AY 2007-2008. This year four students
have interned with GHSCSE faculty on various projects and areas, including an
autonomous child-sized vehicle, digital and adaptive signal processing, digital image
processing, communications, fuzzy logic, neural networks, cryptography, and digital
systems. FDU mentors for this year include Prof. Lewis and Drs. Chen, Mondal, Mao, Zhao,
Silver, Farag, and Tan.
GHSCSE faculty, staff, students, and other volunteers have tutored financiallydisadvantaged
high school students from nearby school districts, including Union City and
Paterson, in the Math SAT Test for the last four years. Seven Math SAT preparation sessions
were conducted this past fall.
GHSCSE has successfully recruited underrepresented minority students into its graduate
programs through the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) STEM Fellowship
Program, which provides generous fellowships and stipends to highly qualified students
graduated from HBCU. Two HBCU students have joined GHSCSE’s programs this academic
year, and two other students graduated last year.
Dr. Zhao organized four IEEE seminars at the Metropolitan Campus this academic year
attended by area professionals.
Aided by Dr. Janarthanan, an Information Technology (IT) Program Advisory Committee
has been formed at FDU Vancouver.
Dr. Janarthanan also organized the Mid-Atlantic/Canadian Mobile Application Forum at
FDU Vancouver in collaboration with the Canadian Consulate General and RIM as well as
two workshops: a multi-day Sound Design Workshop in March 2012 and one-day Digital
Tattoo Workshop in January 2012.
Course & Curriculum Development
A minor in Computer Forensics, developed by the faculties of GHSCSE and the School of
Criminal Justice & Legal Studies, was introduced in Fall 2011.
The Oracle database certification program trained an additional 25 students this past year.
Dr. Lowy is the coordinator and instructor of the program. Additionally, the Enterprise
Computing classes on the IBM platforms “i” and “z” that Dr. Lowy developed with funding
from IBM, have continued to attract students. These students have been sought after by
companies that offer summer internships, co-op programs, and full-time jobs, including UPS,
EMC, IBM, and several consulting companies.
Coordinated by Dr. Mondal, Computer Science (CS) faculty members have developed a
5-year combined BS Information Technology (IT)/ MSCS program which will provide a
seamless pathway for IT majors into the CS graduate program.

The Support Our Students (SOS) program, a joint project of GHSCSE and the School of
Natural Sciences, has concluded another successful year. Hundreds of freshman and
sophomore students benefited from the additional hours, oversight, teaching and
motivational incentives. The retention among these students remains high due to the
structure of the SOS program and the dedication of the SOS faculty. Dr. Lowy is the
Coordinator.
A Special Topics course in Biomedical Engineering, taught by Dr. Reinish, was offered and
was well-received by students.
In support of the Metro Campus Math Initiative, a new “Precalculus with Support” course
has been developed to enable incoming freshmen whose Accuplacer scores are slightly
lower than the regular cutoff score to undertake Precalculus their first semester, but with
additional learning support, saving them time and money. The new version of Precalculus
will be offered for the first time in Fall 2012.
GHSCSE has conducted a seminar series on the latest developments in electrical
engineering, computer engineering, computer science, and their related fields since Fall
2009. Drs. Mao and Zhao coordinate. Twenty-seven seminars on contemporary topics
have been conducted since its inception, including 7 seminars presented in AY 2011-2012.

Journal Awards
Two papers published in the Journal of Management Information Systems, of which V. Zwass is
Editor-in-Chief, won the 2011 Citation of Excellence Awards from Emerald Academic
Publishers. Now in their fifteenth year, these annual awards recognize the 50 most outstanding
articles published by the top 300 management journals in the world.
Student Successes and Activities
Gladwin B. Thomas, a BS Computer Science student, has been accepted into the MS in
Engineering in Computer and Information Science program at the University of

Pennsylvania. He also completed his senior honors thesis, "Design and Implementation of a
Web Application using Java Enterprise Edition," under the supervision of Dr. Tang.
The IEEE North Jersey Spring 2012 Student Paper Presentation Contest was held at FDU's
Metropolitan Campus on February 28, 2012. Under the guidance of Dr. Reinish, the first,
second, and third place undergraduate winners of the contest were Christopher Lau,
Elmine Botes, and Marvin Allen. Graduate student winners were Sindhura Kudaraval,
Eduardo Valdivia-Reyes, and Carine Girgis.
Advised by Drs. Casti and Farag, Wai-lung Kwok, John Sica, and Qiyang Xu competed as a
team in the Garden State Undergraduate Mathematics Conference competition in March
2012. The team ranked 12 th out of 33 teams in their first competition
Members of the FDU-American Society of Civil Engineers (ACSE) Student Chapter
participated in the 2012 ASCE Metropolitan Student Conference, New York City, on April
20-22, 2012, and competed in the Conference Presentation Competition and the
Concrete Canoe Construction/Technical Presentation Competition. The students
designed, constructed, and tested a canoe made of special lightweight concrete, which
they raced their on a pond in Denville, NJ, against other schools. Faculty advisors are Prof.
Bielewicz and Dr. Thomas.
FDU’s Construction and Mechanical Engineering Technology students attended this year’s
Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) Student Summit held in San
Francisco, California, and the MCAA Annual Conference held in Orlando, Florida. Students
also participated in the Mechanical Contracting Competition, involving HVAC,
sustainability, and green building, during the conference, under the guidance of Prof.
Bielewicz.
FDU students joined the Construction Managers Association of America (CMAA) in
December 2011 under the guidance of Prof. Bielewicz. FDU is the first University in New
Jersey to become affiliated with CMAA.
GHSCSE students received scholarships from the Mechanical Contractors Association of NJ,
the Radio Club of America, ASCE, Building Contractors Association of New Jersey (BCANJ),
and Construction Industry Advisory Program (CIAP), and from a Computer Science
alumna. Students have had internships through various individual companies and membercompanies
of BCANJ and CIAP.
GHSCSE has established a key relationship with UPS, which has provided three internships
for our students thus far. It also established a key internship opportunity with the Biomedical
Engineering Department in Hackensack University Medical Center, in which four of our
students participated this year.
SCHOOL OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE & LEGAL STUDIES
Course & Curriculum Development
The School officially introduced its new Masters in Criminal Justice. The first year yielded 25
students representing full-time, part-time, and BA/MA combined degree students.

The School of Criminal Justice and Legal Studies entered into articulation agreements with
Rockland Community College (SUNY) and Bergen County Community College and
expanded its degree completion opportunities at Mercer and Gloucester Community
Colleges.
The School’s Internship program, coordinated by Dr. Kenny, continues to expand. To date,
over 150 different venues on the local, regional, State, and Federal level have provided
experiential opportunities to its students.
In keeping with past years, the annual Project Pride was held on October 20, 2011.
Coordinated by Prof. Reynolds, the program is presented by the New Jersey Department of
Corrections and allows inmates serving time for felony conviction to share their experiences
with students and faculty.
Dr. Vodde and Dean Baldwin of Wroxton College have coordinated a combined
graduate and undergraduate program that will study the respective criminal justice
systems of the U.S. and the U.K. The course is scheduled for June 2012 and represents the
eleventh study-abroad program undertaken by the School.

Student Activities
This year the Criminal Justice Club, advised by Prof. Garcia, participated in several campus
events, including Student Life Club Day, the School’s Admissions Discovery Day, and the
SCAPS Safe Spring Break Program. The Club also engaged in community service, helping to
sponsor a Halloween Party at the Youth Consultation Services- Holley Child Care and
Development Services in Hackensack New Jersey; collecting toys for the Bergen County
Sheriff Department’s Annual Toy Drive; volunteering for the Police Battle of the Blue, an
annual charity event for Tomorrow’s Children Fund.
CENTER FOR DYSLEXIA STUDIES
The Orton Gillingham Teacher Certificate Program was recognized by the International
Dyslexia Association, in its review of college and university programs, as one of only 15
programs meeting its knowledge and practice standards.
The Center offered its now nationally IDA recognized and IMSLEC accredited program in
the following school districts: Cranford, Holmdel, Jersey City, Manalapan, North Brunswick,
North Caldwell, Pompton Lakes, Scotch Plains, Warren Township, and Wyckoff as well as in
the 5 Children’s Dyslexia Centers run by the Masons: Burlington, Hasbrouck Heights,
Northfield, Scotch Plains, Tenafly.
Dr. Farrell was elected Vice President, President Elect of IMSLEC and a board member of
the Alliance for Accreditation and Certification.
Elizabeth Kenny Foggin, an instructor for the Center for Dyslexia Studies, received an award
for Outstanding Multisensory Structured Language Education Teacher from IMSLEC at their
annual meeting in November 2011.

Outreach and Partnerships
The Institute for Math and Science joined SOE in June 2011 with Dr. Shane Smith as the
Director. The Institute has been offering classes to elementary and middle school teachers
in mathematics.
SOE offered the first Summer Teaching Academy (STA), which introduced 17 high school
seniors to the world of teaching and its responsibilities. Students participated in hands-on
activities in math and science and taught a lesson to Camp Discovery students. Nine
participants applied to FDU for this upcoming year. The second STA is planned for this
upcoming summer, which will run for 2 weeks.
An SOE Alumni Chapter has been formed and held its first event on April 25, 2012.
In May 2012, SOE hosted a North Jersey Future Educators Association conference. High
school students from around NJ participated.
The Southeast Morris County Educational Consortium (SMEC) comprised of Hanover
Township, East Hanover, Florham Park and Hanover Park Regional High School has been
meeting regularly with SOE faculty. A mentoring workshop for 30 teachers was held on
June 2011 at the Florham campus.
SOE has been leading the New Jersey Teacher Assessment Collaborative (NJTAC). This
group uses the same instrument, the CCI, to assess their student teachers. NJTAC is
comprised of Caldwell College, Centenary College, St. Peters College, Bloomfield College,
Rutgers University Trenton, Rider University, New Jersey City University, and St. Elizabeth
College. NJTAC meets regularly on the FDU campus.
The annual FDU/Record Conference for area school teachers was held on February 26,
2012. This year’s theme was “Assessing Our Students and Teachers: How Do We Measure
Performance.” Approximately 150 teachers attended, and SOE faculty members M.
Singer, J. Cowen, R. Wohle, S. Smith and D. Aronoff presented in break-out sessions.
SOE has been working closely with the Institute for Sustainable Enterprise on a grant that
the Institute received to incorporate sustainable topics into a school’s curriculum.
SOE held 3, six-hour trainings at the Metro Campus, Florham Campus and at Gloucester
Community College for all graduating SOE teaching candidates about strategies to curtail
harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB). Such training is now required by NJ law.
Eleven QUEST students were sent to the Wroxton campus this winter to do field placements
in local English schools. SOE has partnerships with 7 schools in the area. The program is

Now in its sixth year, the Educators Institute is a continuing partnership between SOE and
the American Conference on Diversity. Two full-day professional development workshops
were offered in December 2011 and March 2012 for educators on Bias and Bullying,

incorporating information regarding the new NJ Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights as well as other
information on salient research and classroom techniques.
SOE was nominated for 3 awards in New Jersey’s Showcase for Higher Education hosted by

Professional Accomplishments
Khyati Joshi presented at the White House Office of Faith Based and Neighborhood
Partnerships in conjunction with Hindu American Seva Charities and the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security on April 20, 2012. Dr. Joshi discussed her research on religion and public
schools with relevant U.S. officials to improve understanding of Buddhist, Hindu, Jain, and
Sikh communities in the U.S. and to inform the development of policies and best practices
in the area of Homeland Security.
Dr. Marlene Rosenbaum was the 2011-2012 Chairperson of the New Jersey Assessment
Consortium, a collaboration of over 15 public and private colleges, universities, and
community colleges, public and private. She co-founded the association with H. Pfleger in
2010 for the purpose of collaborating on assessment activities.
For her efforts on behalf of learning outcomes assessment, Professor Rosenbaum was
awarded an FDU Presidential Citation at the September 2011 University Convocation; Dr.
Teresa Montani gave the Convocation’s keynote address, “Providing Accommodations
for Students with Special Needs at the University Level.”
Dr. Roberta Wohle is an invited member of the Consumer Advisory Council, The Elizabeth
Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Outreach
The Gene Barnett Speakers Series under the direction of Dr. Thomas J. Stavola presented
the NYT Best Selling mystery novelist Harlan Coben on October 11, 2011, and the prize
winning novelist Colum McCann on April 24, 2012. McCann’s latest novel, Let the Great
World Spin, was awarded the 2009 National Book Award for Fiction.

Course & Curriculum Development
SEPH completed a comprehensive revision of its Bachelor of Arts in English degree,
effective fall 2012. This new degree provides students with a foundation in literary analysis,
American Literature, British Literature, and World Literature. In addition, it offers students the
flexibility to chart their own path by choosing from a number of writing and literature
classes offered both at the Metro Campus and at Wroxton.

SEPH also completed a major revision of its Humanities degree and, effective fall 2012, will
offer three new concentrations: one in Digital Humanities, one in Global & Cultural Studies,
and one in Sustainability. These concentrations will also appear as University College
minors effective with the Fall 2012 semester.
The SEPH Writing Program has revised the course codes, titles, and descriptions of English
composition courses to more accurately reflect the learning outcomes and the effective
practice-based pedagogies employed in the courses. The changes become effective in
Fall 2012.

Extramural Grants
Dr. McClary, principle investigator of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Louis Stokes
Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) in Science, Technology, Engineering, and
Mathematics (STEM) grant, received another $24,589 for a third year of funding to increase
the number of minorities who graduate in STEM fields. FDU currently leads the state which
includes Bloomfield College, Essex County College, Kean University, Montclair State
University, New Jersey City University, Rutgers University-New Brunswick, Rutgers University-
Newark (lead institution), and William Patterson University in LSAMP student recruitment.
Drs. Benzecry (SONS) and Radnitz (Psychology), together with the Teaneck Sustainability
Advisory Commission group, obtained a $9,000 Sustainable Jersey Small Grant funded by
Walmart to implement the Green Schools Program in the Teaneck public schools.
Dr. Benzecry received $1,000 from Environmental Waste Management Associates, LLC and
a $300 N.J.D.E.P. “Clean Communities Grant” to continue the Green Campus Committee
sustainable practices.
Dr. Leonida received a $10,000 grant to advance “Enhancement of our knowledge of
nanoparticles containing chitosan" from Hopsteiner, SS Steiner, Inc., NY, NY.

Morrine Omolo, Biochemistry Major, is this year’s recipient of the Metropolitan Campus

Thirteen graduates were accepted into their first choice of professional or graduate
schools. These graduates will be carrying the FDU name as they continue their education
at other universities including Georgetown, Ohio State, UMDNJ, Temple, Tufts, and FDU
Medco.
Eight students are participating in industrial internships.

Pre-Health Professional Club (PHP), mentored by Dr. Leonida. The club provides
information and guidance to students who have a desire to learn about or enter any of
the health professions, including Dentistry, Medicine, Chiropractic, Optometry,
Pharmacy, Podiatry or Veterinary Medicine
Sigma Xi, mentored by Dr. Lo Pinto. This club fosters student participation with faculty in
scientific research and in lectures and seminars at FDU at other universities in the NY/NJ
Metropolitan area.
Course & Curriculum Development
During Spring 2012, 7 SONS students took several courses at our marine field station in
Samana, Dominican Republic. The classes, taught by Drs. Isquith and McClary and a local
adjunct, included Beach Ecology, Tropical Marine Vegetation, Tropical Marine
Invertebrates, Tropical Marine Vertebrates and Marine Biology Research I.
SONS maintained articulation agreements with twelve professional schools from dentistry to
pharmacy and veterinary. This year, the articulation with Palmer Chiropractic College was
revised and three new articulations (LECOM Dental, NYCC Acupuncture and Oriental
Medicine, NYCC Clinical Nutrition) were drafted.
Outreach
Dr. Benzecry hosted the second Sediment Elevation Table (SET) User Group; Meeting of
Mid-Atlantic and Northeast US region practitioners at FDU.
Drs. Kumar and Leonida organized the November 2011 meeting of the Hudson-Bergen
Chemical Society. 45 FDU students participated. Dr. Leonida is HBCS Secretary. She also
organized the 14 th Annual ACS Research Symposium and Award Night (together with
HBCS).
Dr. Leonida evaluated proposals for the Junior Fulbright Awards.
Organized by Dr. Leonida, the 7 th Pre-Professional Fair was held in March. The event
attracted a large number of FDU students as well as many high school students.
Dr. McClary, a Board of Trustees member of the Association of New Jersey Environmental
Commissions (ANJEC) and one of two representatives for Passaic County, became chair of
the Nominating Committee.
SONS Biology Seminar series continued with presentations delivered by twenty six invited
speakers on topics of current interest. Sixteen additional presentations are scheduled for
FDU students who conducted independent study research projects with faculty mentors.

Dr. McClary was appointed as the NCAA Division I Faculty Athletics Representative by

The School of Nursing will celebrate its 60th anniversary this year. Celebrations will
commence with the Nursing Convocation on May 9, 2012. A gala is being planned with

Outreach
HPBSONAH continues to offer courses for the RN-BSN and MSN Programs onsite for its
educational partners: Atlantic Health Systems (Morristown Hospital and Overlook Hospital)
and Holy Name Medical Center. Starting Summer 2012, it will be offering courses at
Hackensack University Medical Center and starting Fall 2012, at Englewood Hospital
Medical Center.
Accreditation
The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) held a site visit as part of the
reaccreditation process for the BSN and MSN programs and of initial accreditation for the
DNP program on November 7-9, 2011. The visitors’ exit report indicated that all programs
met all the criteria for accreditation described in the Self-Study Report prepared by faculty.
The CCNE Board of Commissioners will meet for the final accreditation decision on April 26-
28, 2012, with a written report to be sent to HPBSONAH about one month after the meeting.

10 Accelerated BSN students were awarded the Robert Wood Johnson New Careers
Nursing (NCIN) Scholarship at $10,000 each.
Students Aaron Roth and Angelo Llanes were winners in the annual NCIN essay contest.
Their community activities have been featured on the AACN/NCIN website.
NCIN students raised over $500 for the Relay for Life on campus.
PROGRAMS IN LANGUAGE, CULTURE, AND PROFESSIONAL ADVANCEMENT (PLCPA)
EPS courses are now compulsory for all UG and GR International students on both campuses if
placed into the program based on their placement test score.

New departments came on board to provide academic support/tutoring hours for EPS
students; in Teaneck, the Office of Global Learning and in Madison, the Career Development
Center, Campus Library, and Academic Support Center.
PLCPA tracks student progress and academic support/tutoring done through a dedicated
server shared with the Metro Writing Studio. Currently 73 query reports can be generated such
as “Average improvement between pre-and post test of students required to do 900 minutes
of academic support/tutoring.” Data collected informs programmatic improvements.
PLCPA collaborated with Petrocelli College to offer a NY City as a Classroom Course for a
group of Chinese high school students who came to FDU to take the course over the winter
break.
Dr. Mohamad is the co-author of “Differentiating maximum values in writing centers,” in
Academic Exchange Quarterly, 15(4), 8-12 (Winter 2011) with Janet Boyd.
SCHOOL OF PSYCHOLOGY
Accreditation
The MA/Certification program in School Psychology received National Association of
School Psychologists accreditation (conditional) in February 2012.
Outreach
Through the School’s partnership with several schools, School Psychology graduate
students have served as consultants and program evaluators to the Dumont TLC After-
School Program for at-risk 3 rd and 4 th grade students. Students have also had the
opportunity to provide services at St. Benedict’s School for Boys in Newark, NJ.
Course & Curriculum Development
A combined, 5-year BA/MA in Forensic Psychology has been approved.
A Behavioral Research Scholars Track (BRST) for highly qualified students who are interested
in careers in social science research has been added to the MA in Psychology. Students
can use this program as a springboard for further graduate training or as a terminal degree
for research careers in the private sector.
The School has created a new “Psychology Research Lab" specifically to foster faculty and
student research collaboration. This laboratory opened in September 2011 and has been
in constant use since then. The research lab is equipped with computer cubicles,
specialized hardware and software for conducting cognitive and behavioral research,
and a sophisticated physiological data collection system. The space is ideal for
conducting research on a range of psychological topics, including memory, attention,
face perception, and social behaviors in interpersonal interactions, and has been
equipped with sophisticated technology to allow for physiologic and neurophysiologic
measures. Moreover, research conducted in the lab is already being presented by

undergraduate and graduate students at departmental, regional, and national
conferences and will likely result in peer-reviewed publications.

Student Successes & Activities
This year students from the School of Psychology have published (often with faculty
mentors) 6 book chapters and 6 peer-reviewed journal articles. Students have also had
the experience of presenting posters and papers at regional, national, and international
conferences.
Danielle Politi, a Psy.D. graduate, won this year’s award for the Outstanding Doctoral

Undergraduate Nick Sosa was selected as one of only 15 candidates out of 170
applicants to participate in the NYU SPAM Lab Summer Internship Program. The
program will run from June 4th to July 27 th and takes a hands-on approach to the
teaching and learning of basic research principles and processes.
On March 30, 2012, the School held its first annual Undergraduate Research Day in
which six undergraduate students presented research posters summarizing their
ongoing or completed research projects.
The Psychology Club remained very active, with up to 35 members attending its
weekly meetings and sponsoring several events (e.g., raising money for cancer
awareness with the “Be Bold, be Bald” campaign). It continues to have a regular
column, PSYCH CORNER, in the FDU student newspaper, the Equinox.
Center for Psychological Services
For the second year in a row, the center received a $25,000 grant from the Johnson and
Johnson Family of Companies to enhance our Clinical Services for Veterans and Families
program.
For the second year in a row, the center received a $25,000 grant from Horizon of New
Jersey to enhance our Clinical Services for Veterans and Families program, with a focus on
depression screening, education, and intervention.
For the fourth year in a row, the center received a $6,000 Community Service grant from
New Jersey Psychological Association Foundation for a clinic-based project completed
under the direction of Dr. Ulrich that addresses the needs of the underserved.
The Bergen Record, the Star Ledger, and other papers (3/2012) highlighted the COMPASS
program (and the Center for Psychological Services) and one of the COMPASS
undergraduates in a piece on programs that aid college students with Asperger’s.
The COMPASS team (faculty, doctoral students, doctoral graduates) developed and
hosted a workshop for the community on supporting the successful transition from High
School to College for students with Asperger’s. The workshop was attended by more than
35 parents, secondary school personnel, and adolescents/young adults with Asperger’s.

The center completed a survey (funded by Ace-Walmart Success for Vets grant on which
Dr. Ulrich was co-PI) on FDU Student Attitudes Towards Combat Veterans and Potential
Peers. Results indicated that FDU students are overwhelmingly welcoming and respectful
of combat veterans as potential colleagues. The University of Texas, Fordham University,

and the University of Arizona are currently considering use of our survey to assess the
degree to which their institutions are “Veteran-Friendly.” No other such survey is known to
be available and psychometrically tested.
