predeceasing him in 1932. He joined the Railways Department as a youth <strong>and</strong> retired<br />
in 1918 after more than 40 years of service. Mr <strong>Martin</strong> was a member of the Upper Hutt<br />
Town Board for some time <strong>and</strong> was also a prominent member of the Roman Catholic<br />
Church. He was one of the best known <strong>and</strong> popular guards running on the Hutt railway<br />
line for many years. Mr <strong>Martin</strong>'s maternal gr<strong>and</strong>parents opened the first hotel at Upper<br />
Hutt on the corner where the Bank of Australia now st<strong>and</strong>s. Mr <strong>Martin</strong> is survived by<br />
two sons Frank <strong>and</strong> Basil <strong>and</strong> two daughters Mrs Daniel Boyle <strong>and</strong> Sister Eileen Norbet<br />
of Upper Hutt. His eldest son Horace was killed in the Great War. Three brothers <strong>and</strong><br />
