page 4 - Homecoming As always, Homecoming week added to the excitement of the upcoming dance. Its theme days invited the entire school to spread the spirit and get THS ready for another successful Homecoming game and dance. Here were the themes. Monday – Country Club Students dressed in their preppy attire: polo shirts, khaki pants, and the sweaters around their necks or waists. However, some students decided to go all out with their mix of golf equipment, sunglasses, or a proper cap. Tuesday – Tacky Students matched stripes with polka dots and added a blotchy sweater to finish. They also wore outrageous ties and mismatched winter and Halloween socks over patterned leggings. It was definitely one tacky day. Wednesday – Neon This day was definitely the brightest of Homecoming Week. Students wore construction worker safety vests and highlighter yellow, orange, and green shorts over leggings. Even the guys went all out, strutting their 80’s gym outfits. Colorful duct tape was also a must for Neon Day. Thursday – Fiesta Sombreros and mustaches were seen in every hallway, and fiesta blouses and dresses were an important part to outfits, not to mention the guitars and maracas. Friday – Mum The girls pulled on their overalls and clipped 20 lbs mums on the front, while the boys rolled out of bed and slid their garters up their arms. Cameras flashed in every classroom, while all the girls admired their neighbor’s mums. Although each carried the same type of frame, the charms and toys differed in every masterpiece.
Ready for her close up page 5 - Homecoming Cont. Katherine Owen ‘11 Homecoming is one of the most magical events in a high school student’s life. But between the pressure to find a date and the stress of all the pre-planning, it is hard to imagine that one would have much time to put a lot of thought into their choice of dress. But those of us who sincerely appreciate the value of a stunning outfit know that it is in fact the most important part! As celebrity stylist Rachel Zoe says, “There is never an excuse not to be glamorous”. And to my delight, our Taylor girls did not disappoint; they exuded glamour! Color is, by far, the most important part of any outfit, namely because it is the first thing people see. And the fact of the matter is, the right color is different for everyone, depending on skin tone and personal preference. One of the most prominent colors on the dance floor was black, and rightfully so. It is a classic color that works on any skin tone and is simply timeless. It’s no wonder Karl Lagerfeld decided that “One is never over-or underdressed with a little black dress”. Sometimes, simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. But those who opted to be slightly more daring “sparkled and shined” in eye-catching jewel tones, such as ruby, emerald, and amethyst! I’d call it, understated elegance. While color ranks number one regarding aspects of an outfit, pattern is a close second. And while a solid color dress is a fabulous choice for evening, there are those who wanted a bit more flair. But there is a way to do patterns and there is a way not to. You don’t want to go overboard. For example, I have been seeing a surprising comeback of the over the top stripes and polka dots. While those are very fun p a t t e r s , they are c e r t a i n l y not right for an evening look, and fortunately, I saw absolutely none of that ridiculousness at the dance. But what I did see a lot of were animal prints, especially leopard. Because animal prints allow you to express your inner wild child in a way that won’t stain your permanent record, I am a huge animal print fan. And apparently, so does Diane Von Furstenberg, seeing as it monopolized her entire ready to wear collection. I was actually shopping for a homecoming dress a few weeks ago and a cheetah print shift dress immediately caught my eye. (Think Audrey Hepburn’s “Little Black dress” with a twist). I had fallen in love! Though I didn’t purchase the dress, I will remember it fondly. Another fantastic look is an a b s t r a c t d e s i g n . T h o u g h that style is not nearly as easy to find as an animal print, I was able to spot one girl out of the sea of satin ens e m b l e s in a strapless bubble dress with a whimsical watercolor pattern. Because she appeared to be wrapped up in a conversation at the time, I telepathically complimented her, but only about 1,000 times! Fabrics rank three, and the biggest fabric trend this season is undoubtedly lace! It’s all over the runways and reigned supreme on the dance floor; I’m not just saying that because of my obsession with Blair Waldorf. It’s girly, it’s flirty, it’s sweet, and it dresses up any outfit. But a trend I was not expecting, but was pleasantly surprised by, were sequins. This out-of-the-box source of glitz was an innovative way to add some bling to an outfit without it taking a turn for the tacky. For those of you who were able to handle the ostentatious frock, it was stylistically genius! Regarding the structure of homecoming dresses, I have a question: How many of you watch Project Runway? And how many of you remember Rami, the king of d r a p i n g ? Well, while I was always a fan of the Greek goddess gowns he crafted so well, not everybody else shared the same sentiments. But fortunately for Rami, gathering and draping is definitely in, and it graced the commons of Taylor High School that Saturday night. This particular style of dress allows you to live your most fantastical fairy tale fantasies by transform you into an elegant princess for an evening. It can be difficult to pull off, but it is oh so fun! Though our Taylor Girl’s dresses were simply e x q u i s i t e , their poise and stature is what made them truly shine. The bottom line is, fashion is about beauty and beauty is about confidence. The truth is, “Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief that she is beautiful”, or so says fashion icon Sophia Loren. “There are no rules in fashion. If there were, fashion would be a science, not an art” Future Farmers of America The Creative Side Homecoming walls show off competitive side with more decoration and imagination than ever before FFA won first place in the competition for the best Homecoming wall. They were awarded $300 and a blue ribbon at the Homecoming pep rally. Second place was HOSA and they were awarded $200. And third place was Fashion club and Art club, who did a combined wall and together won $100. Band, FBLA, PALS, Pacesetters, NHS, Spanish Club, Choir, and Blue Review also played a part in the contest and were all awarded $50 for their clubs participation.
