Welcome to
New York
the country’s financial capital. I can certainly say I’m impressed
at the heroic spirit of the people and their ability to pull together
and help each other out.
The famous American writer E.B. White 1 once described New
York as “a city filled with life under difficulties, growth against
odds, sap-rise in the midst of concrete, and the steady reaching
for the sun” . Looking at the Sandy relief efforts in the past
month and the continuing positive attitude of the New Yorkers
in general, I have experienced New York to be a very inspiring
place that lifts your spirits, no matter where you live or where
you come from.

Only recently, early November,
I moved with my family from
Amsterdam to the wonderful
City that Never Sleeps to become part
of Baker & McKenzie’s European Desk
in the United States, proudly representing
the Netherlands. With 72 offices
in 45 countries, Baker & McKenzie
is considered the biggest law firm
in the world. As the European Desk we
work more closely together with our
US colleagues, while we bring our services
closer to our US based clients.
New York (with deep roots that come from the Dutch) is well
known for its 24/7 economy, a city of constant motion and endless
activities, dominating in commerce, finance and culture
acting as a progressive model for the world. A fast-paced city
famous for being a busy, bustling and impersonal city.
I was in a way lucky to discover an “other side” of New York
and its people in my very first week living here. On October 29
hurricane Sandy hit New York City with huge impact leading to
flooded streets, tunnels and subway lines and cutting power in
and around the city. Sadly, the number of lives claimed from the
super storm was more than 50 in this area only, as Sandy rolled
into New York City.
About
Mounia Benabdallah is Attorney at Law & International Tax
Advisor working for Baker & McKenzie Amsterdam N.V. since
2006 (currently based in the New York office). Mounia’s practice
focuses on international tax planning and advice to multinationals
with respect to Dutch, European and International tax law.
Mounia is an AmCham YP member and in the background also
regularly involved with the AmCham Tax Committee (which focuses
on the tax considerations AmCham members are confronted
with in the Netherlands and in the USA) as Mounia closely
works with Baker & McKenzie Partner Wouter Paardekooper,
who is currently chairing the Tax Committee.

I discovered that in a crisis like this, the true nature of New
Yorkers is revealed. While the city was dealing with continued
power outages and mass transit stoppages, I noticed many
New Yorkers opened their hearts and homes to the victims of
the storm and major relief efforts were set up in no time. Even
visitors contributed, amongst whom a group of Dutch runners
who decided to help with the relief efforts after finding out that
the New York marathon would be canceled. Everyone and every
company was involved in some way supporting Sandy relief efforts,
taking place in and outside the City everyday. In our Baker
& McKenzie New York office, for example, a charitable “Bake-r
Sale” was organized to support Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
In the past couple of weeks, a positive attitude clearly took over
the City which must have led to business quickly restarting in
