Research topics ranged from a study of <strong>the</strong> relati<strong>on</strong>ship of envir<strong>on</strong>mental factors<br />
to educati<strong>on</strong>al success am<strong>on</strong>g <strong>the</strong> urban poor of Guatemala (Frank Johnst<strong>on</strong>) to<br />
research <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> art and ideology of <strong>the</strong> 18th century Benin culture in Nigeria<br />
(Paula Ben Amos) to an explorati<strong>on</strong> of an early mining town in Utah (Robert<br />
Schuyler) as part of a study of <strong>the</strong> archaeology of <strong>the</strong> American West. During<br />
<strong>the</strong> spring <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> Applied Science Center for Archaeology held a two-day<br />
symposium <strong>on</strong> “Farming and Nutriti<strong>on</strong> in Antiquity.”<br />
Publicati<strong>on</strong>s. During FY 1982 <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong>’s academic staff published over 60<br />
articles and books, and presented more than 56 papers at nati<strong>on</strong>al and<br />
internati<strong>on</strong>al scholarly meetings. In additi<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> published a calatogue<br />
for <strong>the</strong> Samurai exhibiti<strong>on</strong>, a revised Newsletter, and a new m<strong>on</strong>thly Calendar of<br />
Events. In June, Volume One of <strong>the</strong> Gordi<strong>on</strong> excavati<strong>on</strong>s carried out in Turkey by<br />
<strong>the</strong> late Rodney S. Young will appear. This volume will report <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> excavati<strong>on</strong><br />
of three great tumulus mounds, <strong>on</strong>e of which bel<strong>on</strong>ged to <strong>the</strong> legendary King<br />
Midas. The newly appointed Publicati<strong>on</strong>s Committee is hard at work planning for<br />
<strong>the</strong> modernizati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> publicati<strong>on</strong>s program in terms both of administrati<strong>on</strong><br />
and equipment.<br />
