Biography Tarek H. Selim has twenty years of academic and professional experience within the field of business economics and strategy. Dr. Selim is Professor of Economics, School of Business, at the American University in Cairo (AUC) and Faculty Affiliate to the Microeconomics of Competitiveness Network, Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School. He is founding member of the Alfred P. Sloan Industry Studies Association, University of Pittsburg. He serves as Research Fellow of the Economic Research Forum for the Arab Countries and has been Senior Economic Advisor to the Egyptian Competition Authority. Dr. Selim's research output includes 72 articles in leading international journals and conferences. He has served on the editorial board of many academic journals including Journal of Business and Economics Research, Journal of Technology and Investment, and the Academy Journal of Financial and Administrative Sciences. He received his School’s Research Excellence Award in 2006. His book publication Egypt, Energy and the Environment: Critical Sustainability Perspectives, was published by Adonis & Abbey (UK), London in 2009. Dr. Selim has consulting experience and networking with many local, regional and international organizations. He has been principal consultant to Brookings Institution, Ford Foundation, International Development Research Centre (IDRC), Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER), Dubai Economic Council, Gerson Lehrman Consulting Group, Fulbright Commission, and Konrad Adenauer Foundation. As part of his role in educational administration and management responsibilities at AUC, Professor Selim is Chair of Economics Research and Graduate Studies Committee, Chair of University Senate Budget Review Committee, Chair of Microeconomics Faculty Search Committee, and has been Chair of Zewail Outstanding Student Prize Committee in the Provost Office, Chair of Senate Academic Affairs Committee, and Chair of the AUC Environment Forum in association with the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA). He has been an active member of many other administrative tasks and committees within the University Senate, University Core Curriculum, Department Academic Affairs and Faculty Affairs, School Accreditation, Library Collections and has also served as faculty advisor to various student clubs. Among his professional working experience, he worked at Proctor & Gamble Egypt as Plant Industrial Engineer, and at the Arab Organization for Industrialization as Assistant Project Manager to Lockheed Martin’s F-16 Fighter Project in Egypt ($2 billion project). He also worked for the Center for Agricultural and Rural Development, Institute for Physical Research and Technology, Solar Energy Lab, Information and Decision Support Center, and USAID Economic Policy Initiative Consortium. Dr. Selim earned PhD in Economics from George Washington University and MBA from Johns Hopkins University. He earned MS in Economics from Iowa State University, MS in Industrial Engineering and BS (Hon.) in Mechanical Engineering with minor in Business Administration from the American University in Cairo. Dr. Selim holds multiple certificate and management professional programs from MIT, Harvard, Georgetown, Oxford, and Imperial College. 2
