PERSPECTIVES
Saturday, 20 December, 2008
Towards perpetual existence
of self-reliant rural libraries
In its efforts to bring about rural
development the government is fulfilling the
requirements in economic, education, health
and social sectors.
In that regard, more school buildings,
affiliated basic education high schools, station
hospitals, medical wards and rural health
care centres are being opened in rural regions.
As a result, more rural people have access to
education and health care.
Likewise, altogether over 50,000 selfreliant
libraries have been opened in villages
of different regions in order to broaden the
horizons of rural people.
The emergence of self-reliant libraries
in rural regions helps the people cultivate the
reading habit. This will also help those with
reading habit and adult neo-literates continue
studying different kinds of publications and
further foster their reading habit.
In the meantime, continued efforts are
to be made for perpetual existence and
development of the already opened selfreliant
libraries. And concerted and wellcoordinated
efforts need to be made for all
the self-reliant rural libraries to be complete
with own buildings, furniture, publications
and librarians.
As the emergence of more libraries
helps inculcate rural people with education
and knowledge, it is incumbent upon local
authorities, social organizations, well-wishers
and local people to try their utmost for
perpetual existence and development of the
self-reliant rural libraries.
