In many countries traditional ways of life are giving way to the forces of globalization and the economic imperatives that come with it. In both China and India, traditional systems of support are rapidly changing and trying to adapt as the economies develop. With the crumbling of the “iron rice bowl”, a move away from State enterprises and a demographic trend that is shifting the burden to individuals the traditional support system in China is being forced to change. These factors and more are creating a demographic emergency that is sure to affect the retirement of a rapidly emerging middle class. In India the development of a large middle class in a relatively short period of time is creating additional issues that will have to be dealt with. As in China traditional support systems are quickly eroding and creating a need for individuals to plan for themselves. Listen to some industry experts who have hands on experience in these two marketplaces discuss the impacts for both China and India as well as spin off impacts that could be felt here in Canada as well. Gary Comerford has been instrumental in establishing Sun Life’s operations in both countries. Stuart Leckie is the former Chairman of Fidelity’s Asian operations and a well known pension expert. The presenters will provide their views regarding the future of defined benefit plans based on the submissions. The speakers will focus on what appeared to be the key issues and different possible resolutions to these issues, based on the submissions. Twelve years later, when three boys navigated the Bow River through the western side of the city on a raft of nailed-together railway ties, Barry was at the helm steering the adventure. A six-month trip to the French Alps in 1980 set the course of Barry’s life: to climb the steepest and most complicated faces of the world’s great glaciated peaks, which he has been doing ever since. Barry moved to the mountains in 1982 to pursue his Mountain Guiding career – he is an internationally certified UIAGM mountain guide, and has even worked on such feature films as “K-2”, “Cliffhanger” and “The Vertical Limit”.
