Opportunity Offered
Host families are needed in
the College Park vicinity to house
30 accomplished young pianists
coming from around the world
to compete in the 26th William
Kapell International Piano Competition
and Festival this summer
at the Clarice Smith Performing
Arts Center. One of only four
prestigious international piano
competitions in the United States,
the Kapell takes place July 7 to
21.
Competitor hosts will receive
two complimentary tickets to all
Kapell events and a loaner Steinway
Grand Piano from Jordan
Kitt’s Music for the competitor’s
practice. Hosts are asked to provide
a private bedroom, bathroom,
daily transportation to and from
the Clarice Smith Center and
daily breakfast. A highly rewarding
experience, hosting a Kapell
competitor is a way to support
and associate closely with the local,
national and international artistic
community and an exciting
and personal way to experience
the Kapell.
Greenbelt in the News:
In The Washington Post’s Kids
Post page on Monday, June 4
Greenbelt Elementary School third
graders were featured. The kids
were polled on varied subjects:
favorite authors, TV shows, websites,
pizza toppings, etc. and serious
questions answered. Favorite
pizza topping? Cheese; but pepperoni,
vegetables, sausage and
chicken also were popular. The
biggest problem in the world today?
War, pollution and violence
were mentioned. A nice picture of
Lisa Holinsworth’s 3rd grade class
accompanies the article.
On the same KidsPost page,
children’s author Mary Downing
Hahn was profiled and her new
book “Deep and Dark and Dangerous”
introduced. Hahn, a former
children’s librarian, once worked at
the Greenbelt branch of the County
library system.
And on Sunday, May 27 The
Washington Post Magazine showed
pictures of Greenbelt in its “Then
& Again” feature. They contrasted
the 1942 Greenbelt High School
prom, held in the auditorium of
Center School (now the Community
Center), with Eastern High School’s
modern-day teenagers dancing at
the Crosswinds ballroom. The
same 1942 picture can be seen on
page 91 of the book “Greenbelt:
History of a New Town.”
STOP, LOOK and LISTEN
As we see the flowers bloom and trees turn
green, it reminds us of the one who created
the serene nature in perfect harmony. It
is our job now to keep this harmony in our
dealings as well, as the Creator reminds us:
"The sun and the moon follow courses (exactly)
computed; and the herbs and the trees bow in adoration. And the skies
He (God) has raised high, and He has set up the balance (of justice), in
order that you may not transgress due balance. So establish weight with
justice and fall not short in the balance!" – The Holy Qur'an, 55:5-10
