A Grand Tribute to a Grandmother<br />
Anne Carroll, a new volunteer<br />
at the <strong>News</strong> <strong>Review</strong>, wrote<br />
a beautiful tribute to her grandmother,<br />
which appeared in the<br />
<strong>September</strong> 8 Style section of<br />
The Washington Post.<br />
Carroll, a writer who has<br />
taught English at the college<br />
level, described her grandmother’s<br />
fearless and creative vision<br />
of her life and her art.<br />
A watercolorist, her grandmother<br />
created “large paintings<br />
full of imaginative, dreamy<br />
shapes . . . swaying as if underwater<br />
or behind a veil in<br />
one’s mind.”<br />
She also created a full and<br />
rich life out of the materials at<br />
hand despite divorce, loss of a<br />
son, a second husband and a<br />
beloved grandson.<br />
Through it all, Carroll’s<br />
grandmother had the faith to<br />
move forward. As Carroll<br />
writes, “Evident in her work<br />
is an artist who believes that<br />
she can put onto paper what<br />
is unformed, only glimpsed, in<br />
her mind. She knows she can<br />
create beauty out of nothing but<br />
blank paper and dried paint and<br />
vision.”<br />
