Girl Scouts 100th anniversary!

Since March 12, 2012 we have been having a blast celebrating
the Year of the Girl and Girl Scouts 100th anniversary!
In this edition of Spark you will see and read all about how we
have been celebrating.
Thank you all for being a part of the festivities… from the Century
of the Girl Expo… to planting 10,000 trees… to entertaining 2
princesses… to hiking the national trails… to Rock the Mall… to
marching in the Welcome America parade… to visiting the White
House! What an awesome 6 months it has been… and it has been
an honor to be right there with you.
Thank you to all the GIRLS, volunteers, parents,
sponsors and staff who have made these
programs possible.
These pictures are all from my phone! I thought
you would like to see some of the images I carry
with me all the time!
Looking forward to the next 6 months with you. Thank you for
all you do for your families, communities and our world. You are

discussed female empowerment
and sought leadership advice from
trailblazers who pioneered female
athletic opportunities. Representing
the White House were Valerie Jarrett,
Senior Advisor to President Obama
and Chair of the White House Council
on Women & Girls and Tina Tchen,
Executive Director of the White
House Council on Women & Girls.
Title IX served as a step towards
equal rights for women and created
a pathway for females to become
accepted into athletics on a national
scale. In response to greater
opportunities to play, the number of
high school girls participating in sports
has risen tenfold since 1972, while six
times as many women compete in
college sports today. Despite these
advances, obstacles for female
athletes remain as girls and women
still have fewer opportunities and
often endure inferior treatment in
areas such as equipment, facilities,
coaching, and scheduling.
When asked about the Title IX
anniversary celebration Natalye
Paquin said, “We are honored that our
council was selected to represent the
Girl Scouts of the USA on this national
stage, especially in our 100th year of
service to girls across the nation and
world. Joining me at the White House
are girls from a cross section of our
council who are all accomplished
leaders, athletes and representative
of the talented young women who
take part in the Girl Scouts. Title IX was
game-changing legislation for women
and girls. Many Girl Scouts are athletes.”
The Girl Scouts of Eastern
Pennsylvania (GSEP) was
selected to represent the National
Girl Scouts organization at the
White House on June 20 in a
special celebration of Title IX, which
since 1972 has mandated that no
individual in the United States shall
be excluded from participation in
any athletic activity or education
program based upon gender.
Seven accomplished Girl Scouts
from eastern Pennsylvania, including
four Gold Awardees and three
Girl Scout Advisors to the Board
of Directors, joined CEO Natalye
Paquin in participating in the Title
IX anniversary celebration 40 years
after the legislation was passed. The

I used to think of the White House as
somewhere remote, unattainable—
somewhere a girl like me could never
reach. When I thought of the White
House, I would always begin my
sentences with “I can’t,” whether it
was, “can’t visit there” “can’t work there,” or “can’t do

When I first heard I was invited to go to the White House
something great there.” I’ve always been interested in
government, but always discounted my own ability to
achieve there.
for the celebration of Title IX’s 40th anniversary, I was
overcome with excitement and anticipation. I couldn’t
believe I was among seven girls chosen to attend the
commemoration of landmark legislation that has made
possible all of the success I enjoy today. When we entered
the room in which the program would be held, I was in
awe of all the powerful and successful women who were
around me. My only hope is that I can take the advice and wisdom they
shared with us and utilize it to become as successful and talented as
them. To me, that is the greatest way to honor and commend all they
had accomplished, and how their efforts paved the path to greatness for
all future generations of girls in whatever they aspire to be.
But Girl Scouts changed that. After meeting speakers
like Tina Tchen, Valerie Jarrett, and listening to Billie
Jean King, who recounted a day and age when girls
truly couldn’t only because they weren’t allowed to, I
began to appreciate the legacy that Title IX has left us
today. The breakout session I attended cemented the
lesson. The session was led by a woman who at the
beginning of her career was continuously told by men
that she “can’t,” but her advice to us girls was to “just
work really hard” and we would rise, no matter what
people said.

with numerous influential women is
something special in itself. Title IX is
meaningful to me and allows me to
pursue my educational goals. I love the
sciences and mathematics, so it was
inspiring to see women talk about how Title IX helped them breakout in
careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Women in our time are more involved in these STEM jobs and are
making notable advances in these areas as well. Notable speakers of
the day included Dr. Mae Jemison, the first African American woman
to enter space, and Billie Jean King, professional tennis player who

The Nuts About Reading Program Experience

In the fall, the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania
can participate in something called the NAR
Program, or the Nuts About Reading Program.
For the past couple of years, my own troop, Troop
77126, has hosted the Nuts About Reading Rallies,
which provide a fun experience that motivates girls
from second to fifth grades to join the NAR Program.
My name is Zoe, and I’ve been in Girl Scouts for
eight years. I’ll be a Senior Scout this coming fall,
and I’ve always enjoyed the NAR Program. It not
only helps us become successful, but it also helps
our troops pay for fun trips. For example, my troop got to go to Lancaster
County’s Red Caboose Motel; there, we got to participate in a large corn maze
in the dark. It was fun for everyone, and we would’ve never been able to go if not
for the funds we made from the NAR Program.
The NAR Program isn’t just successful for me, but also for the other Girl Scouts
that participate in it as well. It teaches us about setting goals and reaching
them--challenging ourselves to always do better. The program also encourages
good teamwork with our troop and learning about how to handle money. I’ve
also enjoyed running the Nut Rallies for the younger girls, and doing different
fun activities with them.
I think the NAR Program is a productive and fun way to teach younger girls some
invaluable marketing skills, and it should continue with more scouts to come.

sold 3,400 boxes of cookies this
I year (during the 2012 Cookie
Program), and was GSEP‘s top seller.
That doesn’t just suddenly happen;
I have been working my way up,
setting new goals and not stopping
until I got there. It started in 3rd
grade when I sold 700 boxes. My goal
had been 450 boxes but my mom
knew I could make it to 700 and the
bigger challenge was fun! After that
I was hooked. Selling cookies was
what I looked forward to. For me it
was a lifestyle, not just something
to do. It was the excitement of
beating my past scores and making
my goals. Selling to someone new,
or in a different way, makes my
day better. It was everything.
How do you sell so
many cookies?
Well, it comes down to the basics. Be
friendly, confident, courteous, and
don‘t stop asking! While younger girls
can take advantage of being cute,
for older girls it is so much more!
Everyone likes to be treated well.
I look them in the eye whenever I
speak and I make sure that I am very
clear, so they understand what I am
asking. When you take care like that,
people will take the time to purchase.
People appreciate a professional
young lady, and whether I am in my
uniform or a chicken suit, it is always
clear I’m selling cookies. No one will
accidentally think I am just leaning
on a table or playing around. I am
always courteous, everyone could
be a customer, even if they said no
this time. Numerous times people
come back later and bought from
me because they have seen me
again and again. Don’t be shy. I have
seen lots of Girl Scouts start to work
out of their comfort zone and then
they start to enjoy themselves. I am
a pretty outgoing person, so asking
others to buy Girl Scout Cookies--
including classmates and friends--is
easy for me. I have found that even
if people think you are acting funny,
they appreciate that you are trying.
My classmates are some of my
best customers for smaller sales.
Everyone knows I’m a Girl Scout so
they donate money to Operation
Cookies from Home, and their parents
buy from me because I am in their
class. They will even seek me out
because they feel bad buying from
others. I love that they support me.
Where did you sell
so many cookies?
I guess it would be easier to say where
I didn’t sell all of those cookies! I sign
up for as many cookie booths as I
can fit into my schedule. I do four to
six every weekend and two or three
during the week. That’s why I say it’s
a lifestyle; it’s my hobby for five to six
weeks a year. I also try to stop at a few
businesses every day that I don’t have
a booth. I actively look for donations to
Operation Cookies from Home. I ask
with every sale, I send letters to all the
military organizations in my town, and I
ask my relatives all over the country to
send money. I just feel like Operation
Cookies from Home is great, for both
the USO and the Girl Scouts.
Why do you sell so
many cookies?
That’s simple, I get so much back! I
have fun, I get money for traveling with
my troop, I get to give to the USO, and
I get to say I did it! I am proud of my
accomplishments and I think it will
help me in the future. I have gained so
many skills and met so many people;
it can’t do anything but help me!
So, whether you are a leader, a
scout, or a parent reading this, it
only takes one thing to sell so many
cookies- It takes a REAL Girl Scout!
Courage, Confidence, and Character
are the tools- any girl can do it! I
welcome more competition!

Over 3,500 attendees from nearly every corner of our
council and beyond joined us on the path to Discovery
at the Century of the Girl Expo. It was truly inspiring to
gather our council and community to celebrate girl
leadership! Our goal was to demonstrate leadership in
action by providing a weekend full of notable speakers,
interactive workshops and thoughtful experiences to
engage girls and adults who care about girl issues.

The Expo: a Real Girl’s Experience
If you didn’t get a chance to go to GSEP’s Century of
the Girl Expo this past April, then you missed out on
an awesome experience!

I went with my friend that I met a few
summers ago at Camp Wood Haven.
We are both in high school and are
not in troops, but go to Girl Scout
events together. The event was held
on the weekend of April 21–22 but
we only went on Saturday and from
the flag ceremony that included
every flag in the world where there
are Girl Scouts to the Diggy Simmons
concert that night we had a great
time!!!! In between the flags and
the concert we attended the Real
Girls Conference where we got to
work with other girls to create public
service announcements that raise
awareness about issues we all care
about. I chose ‘hunger.’ The girls I
worked with all had cool ideas about
what our PSA should include as well
as how we can work to end hunger.
After the Real Girls Conference, we
saw Scott Harrison talk about how he
founded ‘charity: water.’ He showed
us pictures of kids and people in
Africa who were sick because of the
contaminated water they use. He
described how the women have to
walk for miles to get clean water and
then carry huge, heavy containers
back to their villages. Because of this,
many girls and women never attend
school because they are needed to
make the long journey to bring water
into their village. Scott Harrison saw
this, and founded his charity, focused
on raising money to create access to
clean water in places all around the
world, which results in people being
healthier and having time to go to
school. Between this and the Real Girls
Conference, I learned soooooo much!
After dinner, we went to the girl party
where Veronica Ballestrini performed,
DJ Diamond Kuts mixed it up for us
to dance and finally, Diggy Simmons
came out and performed! It was a
great ending to an even better day!

10,000 trees
February–May, 2012
Forever Green offered Girl Scouts the opportunity to
take action in their communities to positively impact the
environment and show commitment to environmental
stewardship. Girl Scouts of Eastern PA in collaboration
with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the two
other Girl Scout Councils in PA joined forces to plant
10,000 trees statewide. Every registered troop in the state

Valley Forge Park for “National Trails Day—America’s
largest TRAIL-gating party!” This annual event is a long
standing celebration of the magnificent trail systems in
our country and the many supporters and volunteers

outdoor educational clinics and gear demos, recycling
games, camping activities, Leave No Trace crafts,
‘SWAPS’ at every stop, great music and a birthday cake

Annual Meeting
May 17–20, 2012
The OB-PS, which supports the mission of the World
Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS)
to enable girls to develop their fullest potential as
responsible citizens of the world returned to the United
States for the first time in 15 years for their annual event
May 17-20 in Philadelphia. More than 230 members of
the OB-PS, representing 21 different countries, joined
the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) and Girl Scouts
of Eastern Pennsylvania (GSEP) in celebration of the
Centennial of Girl Scouting in the USA.

A day of programming offered at our council headquarters
where girls spent the day outdoors participating in
workshops creating lasting works of art and celebrating the
100th Anniversary of Girl Scouting with members of the
Olave Baden-Powell Society. HRH Princess Beneditke of
Denmark took time to plant a tree and interact with the girls
while she visited!

I recently participated in the best
event of my Girl Scout career. I am a
Senior Girl Scout from the Emmaus
Service Unit and a freshman at
Emmaus High School. I participated
in the events sponsored by the Olave
Baden-Powell Society (OB-PS)—an
international society of wealthy
dignitaries who support the work of
the World Association of Girl Guides
and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). The
women (and men!) in the society are
amazing. They are so inspiring!
During the events that took place on
May 17 and May 19, I met women from
all of the continents, except South
America. I met women from Canada,
Denmark, Sweden, Scotland, the
UK, Ireland, Nigeria, Australia, New
Zealand, Malaysia, Japan, and many
from the United States. The events
that took place occurred because the
OB-PS held their annual meeting in
Philadelphia this year. Let me tell you
how awesome this opportunity was.
As many of the readers know, this year
is the 100th Anniversary of Girl Scouts
in America. Therefore, almost any
event that I am involved in this year
is awesome. This was the first time
in fifteen years that the OB-PS held
their annual meeting in America. While
some of the women could not speak
English it is awesome that they were
even here in our 100th Anniversary
year, let alone in Philadelphia, which
is in our council. These events were
beyond cool.
On Thursday, May 17, the OB-PS
welcome reception took place at
the National Constitution Center. I
was one of about ten girls there and
I came with my best friend, Maura
B.. All of the girls were given the same
assignment: greet and entertain the
international guests as they arrived
at the National Constitution center
from their buses. We were to speak
to them as we escorted them to the
entrance of the National Constitution
Center. Maura and I were chosen out
of the ten girls there to personally
greet Princess Benedikte as she
arrived at the center. We were thrilled
when we received this assignment.
Even Eddie, the National Constitution
Center guard whom we befriended,
can testify that we were thoroughly
freaking out over meeting the princess
of Denmark. Princess Benedikte is the
main patron and social face of the
OB-PS. The society is the main charity
that she supports. Maura and I were
trained on the protocol for greeting
the princess. We were to curtsy and
politely say, “Pleased to meet you,
Your Royal Highness.” It was surreal.
We did not know that the President
of the Olave Baden-Powell Society,
Vibeke Riemer, was also arriving with
the princess. It was such a pleasure
to meet both of these women. We

met them at their special, secret,
discreet entrance then, we walked
them inside, made a little small talk,
and directed them to their secret
elevator on the far side of the center.
After that we went back outside to
greet the other OB-PS members.
They were all very friendly. They were
as eager to speak to us American
girls as we were to speak to them.
All of the guests were interesting and
were such a pleasure to speak to. I
met an American woman named
Sue who spoke to me about my gold
award. I also met a woman from
Australia. Her name is Dallas and she
was very friendly. She introduced me
to Michiko who is from Japan. Michiko
was wearing a kimono and she gave
us swaps that she made. They were
small paper kimonos with her name
on it. She was short, very cute, had an
interesting haircut, and a funny laugh.
The Scottish women were very friendly
and fun. One was very interested
in my vest. I enjoyed speaking to
all of the women, especially those
who wanted to look at my vest. They
knew right where to look —where the
Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards are
pinned. Most average people look
straight to the patches, which are far
less interesting to me than the bronze,
silver, and gold.
Once all of the guests were inside and
getting settled, all of the girl greeters
took a picture with the princess, then
we ate dinner in the café. Maura
and I met a very sweet girl named
Geeta. She was very friendly and
she reminded me of girls Maura and
I had met together at Camp Mosey
Wood over the summers. Even if we
do not keep in contact with them, we
still talk about them and treasure our
memories with them.
When we walked back up to the main
part of the center, we had signs from
the sponsors with us and we were
instructed to walk with them and
display them while the speaker was
announcing them. Mayor Nutter spoke
and the group of us took our picture
with him. The CEO of WAGGGS spoke
also. I have to mention the Nigerian
women. They were just stunning. Their
outfits and headdresses were like
nothing I had ever seen before. Not
to mention, they were all naturally
gorgeous as well. While we held up our
sponsor signs, the Nigerian women
took their pictures with us.
Maura and I met one particular
woman from Nigeria named ‘Toyin
Phillips who had a beautiful headdress.
She runs a couple of schools with
her husband in Nigeria. She told us
that they call ‘high school’ ‘college’ in
Nigeria! She earned her PhD from
Penn State. It was cool to learn that
because Maura and I have relatives
that attend Penn State.
While the experiences I had on
Thursday were irreplaceable, they did
not hold a candle to the experiences
I had on Saturday. On Saturday,
there were different workshops that
were run by older Girl Scouts at the
Shelley Ridge Service Center. The
younger girls participated in those
activities. There were many more
girls in attendance on Saturday
compared to Thursday. I ran a poetry
unit with a girl named Rachel. We
taught the girls how to write a type
of poem called a Windspark. I was
surprised at the diversity of girls
that I met just from our council.
We ran three of those sessions.
Between the second and third
sessions, all of the girls greeted
the members of the OB-PS as
they came to Shelley Ridge. I met a
woman from the UK who gave me
a 100th Anniversary patch from
her country. I also met a woman
from Canada. I took my picture
with the president of the society. I
also met the CEO of GSUSA, Anna
Maria Chávez. Princess Benedikte
planted a tree at Shelly Ridge and
all of the girls took their picture with
her again. While the members were
eating lunch, all of the girls did the
Ignite flash mob for them. While we
were waiting and preparing for the
flash mob, I met another Australian
woman named Janette. We spoke
about her home in Australia and my
home in Pennsylvania. At lunch, I met
an American woman named Sapreet.
She was very enlightening. She
represented America for a month in
New Zealand during her senior year of

high school through destinations. She
opened up my eyes to so many new
opportunities with Girl Scouts.
During our third session, some of
the OB-PS members came up to
see the activities we were doing
and to speak to us. I met another
woman from Denmark. I met
another few people from the UK
and another Australian woman who
gave me a pen from her country.
After the events at Shelly Ridge were
finished, the girls from my troop and
I attended the flag ceremony for the
OB-PS’s Presentation Ceremony at
the Hyatt at Penns Landing. All of the
members of the OB-PS and the girls
who participated in the flag ceremony
were in the conference room of the
Hyatt. I was the Girl Scout in charge, so
I announced all of the commands for
the color guard. Before the ceremony,
I met the CEO of WAGGGS, Mary
McPhail, and took my picture with her.
Speaking with her was very pleasant. I
was originally instructed to leave the
conference room after I commanded
everyone to sit down. Then, I met
the Vice President of the OB-PS. Her
name is Ginny Radford and she is
from New Zealand. She asked me if
I would stay for the duration of the
meeting to help the members up and
down the steps leading to the stage. I
gratefully accepted. I was thrilled!
The flag ceremony consisted of
singing the World Song and posting
four flags: U.S., WAGGGS, 100th
Anniversary, and Danish. The princess
came into the conference room after
the procession of flags came in. After
the flag ceremony, the president, vice
president, and princess spoke. They
were all very enlightening. I did not
realize that 6 out of 10 women are still
being physically or sexually abused
throughout the world. I sat down
next to the stage. The princess sat
on the stage. There was also a very
good women’s choir called the Anna
Crusis Women’s Choir there. It is one
of the oldest women choirs in North
America and they were trained to sing
special songs for this event. Some of
the songs were “A Song of Peace,”
“Our Chalet Song,” “Our Cabana Song,”
“On My Honor,” and “Make New Friends.“
The Presentation Ceremony
consisted of inducting new members
into the society. Each new member
received a pin and a certificate. They
also had their bio read to the society
and had their picture taken with the
princess. Sapreet and ‘Toyin were a
couple of them. The ceremony was
very interesting and enlightening.
I thoroughly enjoyed everything about
the OB-PS events. I met so many
wonderful women. I also grew a little
bit as a person. I am now considering
adding international studies as a major
when I attend college. I learned about
so many other cultures. I’m sure all
of the girls who participated in any of
these events feel similarly. Thank you
to everyone who helped make the OB-
PS events possible. Thank you, OB-PS,
for holding your annual meeting in
Philadelphia this year! Thanks to you
I have made many irreplaceable and
priceless memories.

GSEP was honored to participate in the opening
festivities with Mayor Nutter at Independence Hall.
The girls of Teresa Brown’s Junior Girl Scout Troop
from the Buttons & Bows Service Unit in West Philly
presented the Nations colors. 225 Cadettes, Seniors
and Ambassadors led the parade’s grand finale. Our
Daisy and Brownie Girl Scouts, their families and
onlookers cheered from the sidelines in support of the
Girl Scouts walking the historic route through old city.
It was a proud day for us all!

Registrations for programs are accepted online or by mail. Girls can
participate in any day program individually, with a group of friends, or as a
troop. Special efforts are made to welcome all girls to Girl Scouting through
ice breaker and team building activities. Please note, while we may be able to
accommodate adults in certain situations, program space is reserved for girls,
and adults are urged to drop off girls to maintain girl capacity.
Weekend and overnight programs do require adult-to-girl ratios be met
by volunteers as referenced in Volunteer Essentials and Safety Activity

Registration Procedures
Registrations are accepted until the
program is full or two weeks prior to the
program date, whichever comes first.
To secure your registration, the
following payment terms apply:
• Cost of program less than $25—
full payment per person must be paid
at the time of registration.
• Cost of program greater than $25—
a deposit in the amount of $25 per
person must be submitted at the
time of registration.
• Placement will not occur without the
appropriate deposit/payment.
• Remaining balance for programs over
$25 must be paid in full 5 weeks prior
to the program. An invoice will be
sent electronically.
• Payments not received by the five
week deadline will be cancelled,
deposits forfeited and girls on the
wait-list will be placed accordingly.
• If space allows registrations less than
five weeks prior to the program date,
full payment must be made at the
time of registration.
Program confirmations will be sent for
all registrations received five weeks
prior to the event.
Online Registration
The Online Registration System is
accessible through the GSEP website
for all types of registration and is the
preferred method for registration,
allowing for immediate access to
available programs and confirmation
of registration.

on the left.
Each individual registering must have
their own account information and be
registered individually. To begin using
the Online Registration System you
will need to activate each account and
create a user name and password. This
step only needs to be completed the
first time you log in to the system.
• Click on the Returning Members box.
• Enter the registrant’s first name,
last name and email address, then
click ‘continue.’
If you receive a ‘duplicate’ message
or ‘customer not found’ message, and
you are a current member of GSEP,
we have misspelled your name in our
system or an email address is missing
from the membership record on file.
• Please send an email to ebiz@gsep.org
with the registrant’s full name and
address, along with an email address
you would like to have affiliated with
the registrant’s record.
• Your request will be processed
within 3 business days, and a reply
email will be sent confirming the
update to the registrant’s record
has been completed.
• You will then be able to go back into
the ‘Returning Members’ section and
complete your login request.
• You will be sent an email with the
subject line of ‘Your Girl Scouts
Account’ with a link that will allow you
to create a User Name and Password.
This link is only active for 24 hours so
immediate action should be taken.
Follow the remaining instructions on

• After you create your User Name and
Password, another email called ‘Girl
Scouts Profile Created’ will be sent to
you with your login info.
• Go back to the site and login. Once
you are logged in, ‘My Account’ will
appear in the left hand navigation

Password for future reference.
• An individual registration is
required for each registrant. Each
registrant is also required to have
her own user name and password.
Emails can be shared among family
members if preferred.
• Approved 01 Troop Leaders can
register multiple girls or adults who
are affiliated with their troop using
the Troop Management feature. Click
the online registration help pages for
additional information.

• Where possible, the event will be
rescheduled or a refund will be issued.

Leaders, parents and guardians

other children at home. Additional
children and/or family members are
not permitted to attend any GSEP
program events.
Per GSEP Policy, all adults who attend
overnight events with girls must have
a current Volunteer Background
Clearance on file at headquarters.
Program space is often limited; some
programs will indicate that adults
may attend only in the ratio specified
in Volunteer Essentials and Safety
Activity Checkpoints.
Due to planning issues and safety
concerns, walk-in girl and adult
registrations cannot be accepted at
any GSEP program.

Dive into the 2013 Cookie Program with our Cookie Rally Kits! Do you want a little help getting your troop excited for the
Cookie Program? Look no further! These Cookie Rally Kits are designed to give you a creative jump start on the 2013 Cookie
Program. Included in these kits are several dolphin-themed crafts and activities. Girls will be able to create their own
‘Dolphin Pillow’ and a beautiful folded paper ‘Dolphin Card’ that they can share with their favorite customer. The crafts and
activities in these kits are really designed for Juniors, Brownies and Daisies, but allowing older Girl Scouts to help teach and
guide the younger ones is highly recommended and is a fabulous bonding experience for all girls! Each kit is complete with

My Gold Award project entitled
“Food from the Farm” took place
last summer at Snipes Farm and
Education Center, a local farm in
my community. I first got in contact
with Snipes after learning about their
Community Supported Agriculture
(CSA) Program. CSA allows members
of the community to get fresh,
naturally grown, local produce each
week from June to November. The
vegetables that are distributed each
week vary. Some weeks include
carrots and celery, while others may
feature bok choy and kohlrabi. Some
of these vegetables weren’t very well
known. To ensure that food didn’t
get wasted and to promote the
importance of buying from local farms,
I decided to address these issues in
my Gold Award project. There were
multiple aspects to my project.
First, I volunteered my time at the
farm. I worked in the fields with the
farm staff and learned the amount of
work that goes into growing something

food get it, and those who have it use it.

about the farming process, I decided
to do my own research about organic
farming and the unknown produce
of the CSA program. I put together
poster boards that displayed
nutritional information for the
vegetables that the CSA members
would be receiving and found easy
recipes for vegetables. I held two
tasting events where this information
was given out to CSA members as
well as samples of a few of the recipes.
Some of the most popular were
zucchini bread, cherry tomato cookies,
and swiss chard and artichoke pizza.
The members enjoyed learning new
ways to cook with the vegetables (and
fruits) and the recipes helped them
not waste the produce.
The second aspect of my project was
a children’s program that was held
on one of the CSA pickup days. On
this day, I had four stations set up
around the farm where kids could
learn about growing organic produce,
composts, chickens, and solar energy.
Each station had an activity where
kids could test their newly learned
knowledge. It was important to me
to educate the next generation
on organic farming and earth
sustainability. I provided Snipes Farm
with a copy of my program so it can be
used in the future.
The final and most easily sustainable
part of my project was setting up a
donation for extra produce at the
farm. Through Feeding America, I
was able to find a local organization
that was willing to accept three to
five bushels of produce each week
during the growing season. With the
completion of all these aspects, my
Gold Award project was completed.
Through my project, I was able to learn
about organic farming, apply it and
reinforce it to others, make sure that
those who need food get it, and those
who have it use it.

SILVER AWARD
Sign Language for a Silver Award By Morgan B.
I earned my Silver Award in November,
2011 because I decided to design a
program to teach sign language to
the Plumstead Police Department,
at the request of the police officers.
It was meant to be, because the
project went beyond what I thought
…the police and EMS relied on my
lip-reading skills to interpret
for forty deaf passengers.

heart. From personal experience, I
knew the importance of being able
to communicate with emergency
responders. While I was a victim of a
bus crash, the police and EMS relied
on my lip-reading skills to interpret for
forty deaf passengers. Realizing that I
didn’t want anyone to go through what
I had gone through, I was determined
to make changes by starting with one
small town.
The sign language program included
sessions that taught officers basic
necessary emergency sign language.
With the knowledge and resources
they received, it benefits everyone
who finds themselves in emergency
situations and alleviates the stress
of the emergency responders. The
books provided to the police officers
contained valuable information and
reference pages. The books were
designed by me and assembled by
my volunteer team. My team also
took classes to be the actors in a
tutorial video and assisted me in my
presentation at the training sessions.
The officers were very appreciative
and my volunteers were inspired
to continue to educate others and
help me spread my message of the
importance of emergency responders
understanding the deaf culture as well
as the language.

BRONZE AWARD
First Aid Kits, Amuse Journey, & Ms. Presidents
A troop of Junior Girl Scouts earned the
Bronze Award, the highest award for a
Junior Girl Scout, by creating first aid kits
for local free libraries of Philadelphia,
White Rock Baptist Church library and
for 100 attendees at Girl Scout Sunday
service. Each scout collected supplies,
designed kits, and delivered/distributed
their first aid kits. Their kits included
band-aids, antiseptic wipes and gauze
for basic first aid along with instructions
on how to care for basic injuries. The Girl
Scout Juniors learned the essentials of
a first aid kit while earning their first aid
badge. They attended Scout Day at the
National Constitution Center where they
participated in activities and discussed
the first aid topic with the FBI, EMTs, and
local police and firefighters. They also
earned the Inside Government Badge
while learning how to be global citizens.
They attended the “We the People”
presentation. With their knowledge of
their presidents and citizenships, they
decided to bust the stereotype of no
female presidents. Each Girl Scout
selected a president and renamed
their president a “female name” and
researched what their president was
famous for during their presidency.
They applied the Girl Scout Law
and acted out how they would have
been the female president during
their presidency. They completed
the Amuse journey by having a
round table breakfast discussion
as Ms. Presidents and celebrated
the completion of the their Amuse
journey with “ an everybody” birthday
celebration in honor of the 100th
birthday of Girl Scouts in March 2012.

2012–2013 Gold & Silver Award Workshops
Workshop Objectives
Participants will learn how to transform a community
service project into a Silver or Gold Award Take Action
project. To do this they will identify expressed community
needs, develop a Take Action Project plan that identifies a
root cause and has measurable and sustainable impact on
the community, and learn to advocate for themselves and
others. While the girls develop a project plan, the adults will
learn about the approval process, ways to fund the project,
and sample project ideas.
*Participants who attend a three-hour workshop will have an
opportunity to work with the council learning facilitators to
fill out the award Project Proposal paperwork and discuss
possible projects.
Service units may request an awards workshop in their
area if none of the above workshops are offered in your
surrounding neighborhood. The workshop must be
scheduled at least two months in advance and serve
a minimum of 15 people. Contact Joan Hannahoe at
jhannahoe@gsep.org to schedule a workshop.
Please note that a girl needs to complete the age level
Journey required for the award before she registers for the
workshop. Girls, parents and volunteers are welcome to
attend the awards workshop.

My Destination Experience
My first destination was Aviation Challenge and Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama.
I flew on a plane by myself and I was very excited to get there. During my first week
I learned how to fly a fighter jet plane, how to survive in
different types of locations, build a campfire, and
put up a tent. Finally I learned how to do military
missions. On my second week at camp I met a
famous astronaut and did different types of
projects. We went to the amusement park behind the
camp, and completed astronaut missions. I enjoyed
meeting new friends during my destination.

CADETTE PROGRAM AIDE
Program Aide is an award that provides Cadettes with a
deeper understanding of what leadership development
means. By earning the Program Aide Award, Cadettes will
share their skills, test their knowledge, and try out new
mentoring roles. Requirements to earn the Cadette
Program Aide award:
Earn one Leader In Action (LIA) Award. (It is highly
recommended that this requirement be completed or in progress
when taking the GSEP Program Aide training course.)
You can earn an LIA award by assisting a group of Brownies
on any of their Journeys. There are three different
LIA awards, one for each Journey series. Complete
requirements can be found in the Brownie Leadership
Journey adult guides.
Complete the GSEP Program Aide training course.
The GSEP Program Aide training course will be offered for
Cadettes in grades 7–8. For summer camp (neighborhood
and GSEP), this means it will be offered
for girls entering Grades 7–9.
Work directly with younger girls over six activity sessions.
This might be assisting girls on Journey activities, badge
activities, or other sessions. You might work with a group
at their meetings, at a day camp, or during a special
council event.

Did you know that girls can create and design their own Girl Scout badges?
Brownies through Ambassadors can decide what they want to learn, and then
develop—either on their own or with friends—a badge that helps them build
that skill. Once a year, girls can earn the badges that they themselves create.
Make Your Own badges are girl-led and should be completed independently
by girls, with guidance from a parent or other trusted adult. Brownies or
Juniors can work together as a troop or group to create and follow the same
learning plan for their badge. Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors working in
a troop or group setting can make a badge about the same topic, but each
girl should have her own individualized plan. There is no need for GSUSA,
council, or volunteer approval. All relevant information can be found in
the back of the badge section in the Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting.

Service to Girl Scouts
Every Girl Scout is prepared to do heroic things.
When a girl receives one of these awards, she’s
being honored for doing something exceptional,
such as saving someone’s life.
Medal of Honor This award is given to a Girl Scout
who has shown presence of mind (a clear and calm
head) and true Girl Scout spirit in an emergency.
Bronze Cross This award is given to a girl who has
shown extraordinary heroism or who has risked her
life to save another’s.

Community Service Bars recognize Girl Scouts
who are making a difference in their community
and practicing the values of the Girl Scout
Promise and Law. To earn the bar, girls must
develop a partnership with an organization and
get it approved by the council before becoming
involved in their cause.
To get a partnership approved, please complete
the first two pages of the form found under the
‘For Girls’ section of www.gsep.org. Once the
partnership is approved, girls must provide at
least 20 hours of service and then submit the
rest of the form to receive approval. Forms can
be submitted to girlawards@gsep.org.
GSEP Green Project
GSEP’s Green Project is open to all troops and
individuals who are planning an Earth Day-related
Service Project between April 13th and April
27th. Please let us know what project you will be
completing, as well as the estimated number of
hours that you plan to spend on it. Forms will be on
the website in January 2013 so that you may submit
your project details.
Suggested Earth Day activity locations include
schools, churches, arboretums, playgrounds, nature
centers, and national, state, or local parks.
Suggested Earth Day activities include tree or flower
planting, removal of invasive plants, creek cleanups,
painting murals outdoors, building bat boxes,
adopting a trail, or educating others about the
significance of Earth Day.
MLK Day of Service
Please join thousands of Girl Scouts across our Council on
Monday, January 21, 2013 to celebrate the 18th Annual Martin
Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.
To get started, you need to choose a project. Consider the needs
of both your community and GSEP. You can then begin planning
your project and determining details such as project site, tasks,
number of volunteers needed to complete the project, etc.
Some possible project sites/partners include schools, civic
organizations, communities of faith, local businesses, and more.
Next, register your project online at www.mlkdayofservice.org.
You will create a profile, add your King Day of Service project,
return to the site to manage and update your project, and
manage your t-shirt request.
Recruit volunteers to ensure you are able to accomplish
your project. Try to involve a diverse group of people.
There are so many ways to serve! Here are six possible
ways that you could address community concerns through
active citizenship:
Volunteer Lead a direct service project, such as indoor
or outdoor clean up, mural painting, or meal service.

members about issues of concern.

Cooking Instructions
Cook vermicelli until al dente (cooked just long enough to be
still firm, and not too soft), drain, rinse until cool, and set aside.
In a sauce pan, heat and stir soy sauce, chicken broth, crushed
cookies, lime juice, garlic, ginger, and red pepper flakes until wellcombined.
Pour sauce over noodles and toss to coat evenly.
Stir in cooked chicken, sweet red pepper and cilantro and serve
immediately.

8 oz. Vermicelli
¼ cup soy sauce

11 council scholarships. The scholarship applications will be posted on
the Girl Scouts of Eastern PA website by September 1, 2012. Some of the awards
are scholarships for college, while others are for recognition of contributions to
the community. Each award has different requirements and applications. This
application process is open to all members who meet the criteria of the awards
that are offered. Please note the timeline below to participate.

Have you ever been bullied? Maybe you’ve
been mean to someone else, or perhaps
you’ve witnessed a friend or classmate
being picked on. Whichever role you’ve
been in—victim, bully, or bystander—you’re
probably familiar with the practice.
Bullying is aggressive, repeated behavior that involves an
imbalance of power, and it is far too common in the lives
of kids today. Kids involved in any aspect of bullying can
suffer significant negative effects, including increased rates of
depression, poor grades, and substance abuse.
If you are bullied, please remember that you are not to blame.
Some people feel threatened by anyone who looks or acts in a
way that’s outside the mainstream, but you should strive to be
true to yourself, even if it makes others uncomfortable. Lady
Gaga, now known for her unique look and innovative style,
was thrown into a trash can in high school; Demi Lovato’s 7th
grade classmates made fun of her so much that she eventually
switched to homeschooling.
A number of celebrities have chosen to become antibullying
crusaders, but you don’t have to be famous to
make a difference. As you know, Girl Scouting builds girls of
courage, confidence, and character, who make the world
a better place. Since you’re fortunate enough to be part
of an organization that focuses on empowering girls, feel

Girl Scouts all across the country are standing up to bullies.
In Michigan and Florida, middle school girls have earned
their Silver Awards by implementing an anti-bullying
initiative in their schools; a high school senior in New
York achieved her Gold Award after writing “Say Boo to
Bullying,” a series of skits that were performed for an
entire elementary school. You can draw inspiration from
their examples of activism or come up with a unique
idea of your own! If you’re working through Agent of
Change, Amaze, or any of the It’s Your World—Change
It! Leadership Journeys, consider doing a Take Action
Project that’s centered on an anti-bullying campaign.
If you are looking for more resources, www.stopbullying.gov
and www.adl.org/npfh are two websites with information
about bullying, as well as suggestions for how to confront
it. In a recent speech on the topic, President Obama
said: “Bullying can have destructive consequences for
our young people. And it’s not something we have to
accept.” Regardless of whether you have been a bully,
victim, or bystander, now is the time to stand up and
make a difference.
