After the second marking period, <strong>STUDENT</strong>S WHO ACADEMICALLY QUALIFY (90 Average [93%<br />

starting with students entering high school in the 2010 – 2011 school year] weighted for AP and honors)<br />

will receive a letter inviting them to pick up an application packet.<br />

This application will have specific instructions and must be complete and turned in by the due date<br />

indicated.<br />

One aspect of the application is participating in both community and school service activities. In order to<br />

become a National Honor Society member you must complete:<br />

*10 Community Service Hours<br />

*10 School Service Hours<br />

(These hours must be completed from September 2009 - Application due date)<br />

*There are very specific requirements about activities that count as school service and as community<br />

service. Failure to complete the appropriate activities will impact your acceptance into the National<br />

Honor Society.<br />

Examples of Service Activities<br />

COMMUNITY SERVICE<br />

10 Hours<br />

*All hours must be through a recognized<br />

community service organization<br />

• Assisting at a temple or church<br />

event/activity<br />

• Walk-a-thons<br />

• Youth Group Activities<br />

• Nursing Home/Hospital Volunteer<br />

• HHH Community Library<br />

Clubs/Homework Help<br />

• Team Tutoring at Elementary Schools<br />

• Volunteering at Homeless Shelters or food<br />

banks<br />

• Fundraising for a specific cause. Such as<br />

Habitat for Humanity, Breast Cancer.<br />

Not Acceptable<br />

Volunteering in an office/business. Unless<br />

that business is not for profit.<br />

Tutoring/Babysitting a neighbor<br />

Activities in the community that are<br />

required as an active member in a school<br />

club.<br />

SCHOOL SERVICE<br />

10 Hours<br />

• Active Club Membership (5 Hours)<br />

*For each club that you are an active<br />

member (key club, interact, etc.) you will<br />

receive 5 hours.<br />

• Fall Sport (5 hours)<br />

• Winter Sport (5 hours)<br />

• Pit Band (5 hours)<br />

• Natural Helpers<br />

• Ushers for School Events<br />

• Assisting a teacher<br />

• Attendance office assistant<br />

• Library assistant<br />

• Fall Drama<br />

Not Acceptable<br />

• If you are using a school club for 5 of your<br />

school service hours. Activities that are<br />

required of active club members such as<br />

Safe Halloween or Homecoming will not<br />

be accepted.<br />

*If you are currently participating in or thinking of services other than those listed above, you must<br />

submit a short write up to the NHS advisors to confirm that these hours will be accepted. Otherwise<br />

they may not be.<br />
