Isophtalic polyester is also
used. Both are very resistant to
water penetration.
All Hallberg-Rassy hulls have a
sturdy rubbing strake,
integrated with the hull, and a
deep bilge. Should any water
enter the boat, it will always be
channeled to the deepest point
of the bilge.
Optimal GRP hulls
A good hull is a base for a
solid yacht
Hallberg-Rassy has over 40
years experience building GRP
(Glassfibre Reinforced
Polyester) hulls. All hulls are
hand laid up in GRP under
careful quality control
procedures by a subsidiary
company owned by HR. No
other hulls are built there.
The outer skin of the hull is
made in isophtalic gelcoat.
The keel area is solid laminate
and has a grid system of an
advanced design that reinforces
the hull under the waterline.
The rest of the hull is insulated
against heat and cold with
Divinycell closed cell foam,
which will not absorb water. To
further increase stability, woven
roving is used combined with
traditional glassfibre mat.
The grid distributes loads from
the bottom out into the hull in
case of grounding. The main
bulkheads are laminated in
position from both sides. On
all models of 34 ft and larger,
the hull and deck are joined by
overlapping laminate; there are
no bolts or screws. This is a
method we have been using for
over 35 years and it is 100 per
cent waterproof. The inside of
the hull is top-coated twice.
The bulbed lead keel is bolted
on and gives a low centre of
gravity, which in return
provides excellent stability. The
rudder has three bearings and
the shaft is thick, solid stainless
steel cast into the solid rudder
blade.
