Foreword It is with pleasure that I welcome the publication of this guide for health and nutrition workers in South Africa. Conducting a district-wide or sub-district assessment of malnutrition together with the resources available to remedy the situation must be one of the first steps for any district or sub-district health team in South Africa. This guide also emphasises the importance of team-work, inter-sectoral collaboration and local ownership in conducting a Nutrition Situation Assessment. I hope you will enjoy using this guide, and that it will contribute towards a more effective response to the problems of malnutrition.
