Message from David Loving
I’d like to begin by wishing everyone a safe and healthy 2012! I would also like
to thank <strong>the</strong> entire staff of Hugh Chatham for <strong>the</strong> extraordinary work you do
and have done throughout 2011! Because of your hard work and dedication
to our patients, you have helped <strong>the</strong> hospital realize several remarkable
achievements.
To begin, our long-term care nursing facility has achieved <strong>the</strong> federal Centers
for Medicare and Medicaid Services 5-Star Rating. This is a tremendous honor,
and proves <strong>the</strong> staff’s commitment to providing exceptional quality care.
The Primary Stroke Center has received <strong>the</strong> Joint Commission’s Gold Seal
of Approval. This is <strong>the</strong> culmination of two years of intensive planning,
organizing and execution, and now gives <strong>the</strong> people in our region life-saving
stroke care that <strong>the</strong>y might not have o<strong>the</strong>rwise realized.
Finally, HCMH is among <strong>the</strong> first hospitals in <strong>the</strong> state to achieve Stage 1
Meaning Use as defined by <strong>the</strong> federal Health Information Technology for
Economic and Clinical Health Act. The processes involved in achieving this
designation are revolutionary in terms of patient care, and only through <strong>the</strong>
dedication of everyone could this have been achieved.
This Communiqué issue includes more detail about <strong>the</strong>se achievements, and
everyone involved in helping up us reach <strong>the</strong>se goals should feel nothing but
pride. The people we serve will know of <strong>the</strong>se achievements as well, and we
will continue to build fur<strong>the</strong>r confidence that HCMH has <strong>the</strong> facilities and
services <strong>the</strong>y need to receive exceptional care.

Long-Term Care Nursing Center
Achieves 5-Star Rating
Proof That Our Staff Has
Patient Care As Its Highest Priority
Over <strong>the</strong> years, The Hugh Chatham Long-Term Care Nursing Center has
earned a reputation for <strong>the</strong> warmth of its staff, and <strong>the</strong> quality of care <strong>the</strong>y
provide for residents.
The staff’s hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed as <strong>the</strong> Nursing
Center recently achieved <strong>the</strong> federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
Services 5-Star Rating.
To achieve this prestigious rating, certified nursing homes must meet over
180 regulatory standards designed to protect nursing home residents. These
standards cover a wide range of topics, from proper management
of medications, resident care and security, to <strong>the</strong>
safe storage and preparation of food.
What this means to folks in our region
is that <strong>the</strong>y need to look no fur<strong>the</strong>r than
<strong>the</strong>ir own backyards to receive exceptional
quality care for <strong>the</strong>mselves, or loved ones.

Gold Seal of Approval
Superior Care For Stroke Patients Acknowledged
The Primary Stroke Center at Hugh Chatham has achieved <strong>the</strong> Joint Commission’s Gold
Seal of Approval. This national certification recognizes <strong>the</strong> center’s efforts to foster better
outcomes for Stroke Care.
To achieve this distinction, <strong>the</strong> Primary Stroke Center has demonstrated a high level
of quality care, treatment and performance measurements, including compliance with
<strong>the</strong> clinical practice guidelines of <strong>the</strong> American Heart Association, and <strong>the</strong> American
Stroke Association.
When one suffers a stoke, time is critical.

From helping prevent errors to ensuring health care providers have up-to-date
access to records, Electronic Health Record (EHR) technology benefits staff and
patients in numerous ways.
At HCMH, we have been recognized among <strong>the</strong> first facilities in North Carolina to

Self-Motivation & Enthusiasm
of Staff Cited Among Reasons
Healthcare IT News has ranked HCMH’s IT department
as <strong>the</strong> #1 Small Hospital IT Department for 2011.
Managed by Lee Powe, <strong>the</strong> nine person staff was selected by <strong>the</strong> publication for its
dedication to <strong>the</strong> overall health of <strong>the</strong> hospital’s patients, its positive attitude,
productivity and professionalism.
That’s an impressive feat given <strong>the</strong> challenges that tight deadlines and maintaining
high levels of customer satisfaction can pose on <strong>the</strong> team on a daily basis.
The IT team’s dedication is also a major contributing factor in helping <strong>the</strong> hospital
realize <strong>the</strong> federal government’s Meaningful Use Certification. Without this group’s
efforts, implementing Electronic Health Record technology would not have been
possible, which was a critical component for <strong>the</strong> hospital to receive this certification.

chose <strong>the</strong> hospital for this award

made to ensure that patients and

Doctor’s

Reconstructing Lives
Through Plastic Surgery
When most people think of plastic surgery, <strong>the</strong>y often think of cosmetic
procedures. However, reconstructive surgery is a critical component of Plastic
Surgery practices, such as Dr. Gilson Kingman’s, located at 150 Chatham Medical
Park in Elkin.
“I am most gratified when my team and I are able to restore a patient’s body
image, especially if she has breast cancer,” says Dr. Kingman.
Dr. Rob Peterson, General Surgeon, located at 680 Parkwood Medical Park,
performs mastectomies for women stricken with breast cancer. Dr. Peterson has
partnered with Dr. Kingman to provide state-of-<strong>the</strong>-art expander/implant breast
reconstruction at <strong>the</strong> time of a mastectomy. Both physicians believe this is a great
service to <strong>the</strong>ir patients.
The procedure is effective for single and double mastectomy patients, and every
precaution is taken to create a natural, comfortable end result. Plus, most
insurance plans cover <strong>the</strong> variety of procedures that need to occur. And through
advances in technology and practices,
“expander/implant reconstruction”
offers a short hospital stay and
minimal downtime.

Evan Ballard, M.D.
Dr. Evan Ballard
of Jonesville Family Medical Center
has been appointed to serve on <strong>the</strong>
Editorial Advisory Board of <strong>the</strong>
Prescriber’s Letter.
Prescriber’s Letter is a national monthly
newsletter which provides updates and
commentary about medications
oriented to primary care doctors. This
publication is relied upon by doctors
across <strong>the</strong> country to keep up-to-date
with drugs as <strong>the</strong>y become available or
as <strong>the</strong>re are changes in <strong>the</strong>ir usage. Dr.
Ballard meets with <strong>the</strong> editorial board
monthly to review and edit <strong>the</strong> final
edition of <strong>the</strong> Prescriber’s Letter.

Mike Parlier
Plant Operations
Mike has been employed by
HCMH for 18 years. During this
time, he has made many friends
both inside and outside of <strong>the</strong>
organization. Mike is always
very pleasant to be around and
his commitment to his job and
this organization is evident from
<strong>the</strong> moment you meet him.
Every year, Mike works <strong>the</strong> hospital golf tournament. Going
above and beyond, his attention to detail and willingness to
do whatever is necessary is one of <strong>the</strong> things that makes it a
success. Among his responsibilities, Mike works on signage
for <strong>the</strong> tournament.
Mike was instrumental in making <strong>the</strong> Hugh Chatham Idol/
Variety show happen. He not only secured <strong>the</strong> venue, but
was responsible for lights, sound, and advertising as well as
working <strong>the</strong> day of <strong>the</strong> show. The event raised $1,500 to be
used for nursing scholarships.
Mike considers his customer’s time as valuable. Mike was
asked about changing <strong>the</strong> table in <strong>the</strong> medical staff lounge
because of years of wear and appearance, which was a
routine request. Mike treated <strong>the</strong> request with a sense of
urgency to get <strong>the</strong> job done. Within a week, a new top was
placed on <strong>the</strong> table matching <strong>the</strong> room décor with an easily
cleanable surface that looks great.
Mike’s actions have recently impacted a patient’s care directly.
A currier was delivering special instrumentation to <strong>the</strong>
operating room for an orthopedic case and had a flat tire
leaving him stranded. Mike stopped what he was doing when
he learned of this to go help <strong>the</strong> currier. After he changed <strong>the</strong>
tire, he drove back to <strong>the</strong> hospital and assisted staff by carrying
<strong>the</strong> instruments to sterile supply to be processed. Without his
action, <strong>the</strong> patient’s surgery could have been delayed.
Besides working at HCMH, Mike is on <strong>the</strong> city council in
Sparta, NC. He also served as a volunteer fire fighter for
many years until he retired from <strong>the</strong> Dept. Mike has two
sons and three grand kids that also keep him busy at home.
It is employees like Mike that makes HCMH so successful
in <strong>the</strong> health care field.
Mike, you are a Champion!
Josh Stanley
Respiratory Tech
Josh Stanley has been a
Respiratory Tech at Hugh
Chatham for <strong>the</strong> past year. In
this short period, he has
demonstrated an extremely high
work ethic, dedication to his
patients, and is a role model for
<strong>the</strong> standards of performance.
Josh’s manager and co-workers
agree he delivers exceptional quality care to every patient. He
is described as a person who never complains and is always
willing to roll up his sleeves to get <strong>the</strong> job done. If Josh
discovers <strong>the</strong> next shift is shorthanded, he has been known to
complete <strong>the</strong> rounds for that shift so <strong>the</strong>y don’t start <strong>the</strong> day
behind schedule.
Many nurses have expressed <strong>the</strong>ir appreciation for Josh. On
one occasion, a patient pulled out <strong>the</strong>ir IV and without
asking, he was <strong>the</strong>re to help clean up. The nursing staff also
expressed <strong>the</strong>ir gratitude for <strong>the</strong> way Josh explains treatments
and <strong>the</strong>rapy to patients. His positive attitude and willingness
to educate properly reduces anxiety and improves clinical
outcomes in our patients.
Josh is attentive to his patient’s needs. He is quick to respond
to emergent situations. In <strong>the</strong> ICU, an adult patient’s
condition was rapidly deteriorating. Josh’s ability to quickly
intubate <strong>the</strong> patient not only impressed <strong>the</strong> physician, but
also left a lifelong impression on <strong>the</strong> patient’s wife.
Recently, Josh was described as being “amazing” during <strong>the</strong>
hospital fire. Josh, along with his co-worker carried 4-5
oxygen tanks up 3 flights of stairs to get oxygen to all <strong>the</strong>
patients. Without action, some patients would have been
delayed in receiving care or could have suffered respiratory
distress. He fur<strong>the</strong>r helped with o<strong>the</strong>r hospital staff to
evacuate patients to a safe place in <strong>the</strong> hospital.
Josh not only displays a compassionate, caring, personality at
work, but also in <strong>the</strong> community. Josh is a skilled plumber
and carpenter, and dedicates his time renovating and
repairing his church. He also extends his skills to family and
friends. Josh is married to Julie, who shares his caring attitude.
They are foster parents and have adopted a son named Paul.

<strong>the</strong> pURSUIT of exCELLENCE
Going Green.
Saving Green.
At Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, we take being good stewards of our physical
environment very seriously. Helping protect our environment is not only <strong>the</strong> right
thing to do, it will also help us save tens of thousands of dollars that literally would
have gone up in smoke, or thrown away.
One example is that <strong>the</strong> hospital recently replaced three original boilers used for
heating <strong>the</strong> facility that were installed in 1972. The new boilers, which run on
clean-burning propane and natural gas, will save <strong>the</strong> hospital $50,000 to $95,000
annually in electricity, water and fuel costs. And with <strong>the</strong>ir increased efficiency,
far less greenhouse gases will be expelled into <strong>the</strong> atmosphere.
Ano<strong>the</strong>r example is <strong>the</strong> addition of a new centralized printer, copier,
scanner and fax server from Ricoh. At its full implementation, <strong>the</strong>
hospital will eliminate <strong>the</strong> use of over 200 LaserJet and inkjet printers,
thus saving electricity, ink and toner, and paper costs. The dedicated
fax server will enable faxes to come in and be sent out on network lines
vs. analog phone lines, which will increase speed and reduce costs of
maintaining dedicated phone lines. Once fully implemented, <strong>the</strong> hospital
will use significantly less paper, printer related items, and electricity, and
will save approximately $50,000 to $100,000 per year.
Duke Intern On-Site to Help

her internship.
Through Duke University’s Nicholas School of <strong>the</strong> Environment, Hugh Chatham
sought an energy audit in 2011. Duke Intern Erin Shown, MEM/EE spent last
summer on site to evaluate <strong>the</strong> Hospital’s energy management as related to energy
efficiency, reduction, and cost savings. The result—new boilers. The Hospital
Foundation was granted this internship by application in early 2011. Erin Shown
holds a Master’s of Environmental Management from <strong>the</strong> Duke Nicholas School.
She is a Certified Leed Green Associate. Serving <strong>the</strong> Peace Corps as Environmental
Coordinator in Bolivia, Charagua, and Santa Cruz, Erin has seen and studied all
levels of energy use. Her specializations are in sustainable systems, climate change,
energy efficiency and renewable energy. Hugh Chatham thanks Duke University for
its assistance to organizations throughout North Carolina.

Celebrating
Celebrating <strong>the</strong> Holidays
Hugh Chatham Employees, along with <strong>the</strong>ir children,
made a great showing at <strong>the</strong> 2010 Elkin Christmas Parade. Since
2010 marked <strong>the</strong> 100th Anniversary of <strong>the</strong> Yadkin Valley railroad,
<strong>the</strong> parade was given a train <strong>the</strong>me. In keeping with this year’s
<strong>the</strong>me, <strong>the</strong> employee team created “The Hugh Chatham Express”.
Reminiscent of <strong>the</strong> children’s book and movie, The Polar Express,
<strong>the</strong> clever employees created a float to look much like <strong>the</strong> familiar
movie scene. Complete with Dr. John Venus as <strong>the</strong> conductor and
<strong>the</strong> children wearing pajamas, <strong>the</strong> participants tossed logo hot
chocolate packets into an eager crowd.

patients. At a celebration dinner held in
<strong>the</strong> Hospital Main Lobby in January,
Executive Director of <strong>the</strong> North
Carolina Stroke Association, Beth Parks,
told guests that nationally recognized
stroke care in a community hospital
proves dedication and quality among
<strong>the</strong> staff. Hugh Chatham’s Certified

Chatham Golf Classic
The 20th annual Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital Foundation Golf
Classic was held August 18th at Cedarbrook Country Club in Elkin.
Benefiting <strong>the</strong> Foundation’s Sharing <strong>the</strong> Vision campaign for a new and
expanded hospital, this year’s event raised more than $45,000.
The golf committee honored Jeff Seaford for starting <strong>the</strong> tournament twenty
years ago and for growing it into a regionally recognized and highly sought
golf classic. Local artist William Sanders was commissioned by <strong>the</strong> group to
paint a portrait of Seaford in his “classic” golf attire. The portrait now
adorns <strong>the</strong> wall in <strong>the</strong> Seaford home.
Foundation Vice Chairman Elizabeth Callaway spoke at <strong>the</strong> awards
dinner saying, “our golf classic is so vital to our fundraising campaign. The
tournament not only provides needed financial support for our campaign
but also brings many visitors here from outside our community. It is a
chance to introduce our guests to our great Hospital and community.”
Tournament Chairman Jeff Seaford added, “we truly appreciate <strong>the</strong> many
volunteers who make this tournament one of <strong>the</strong> most successful in our
region. Special thanks goes to Cedarbrook Country Club’s excellent staff
for <strong>the</strong>ir work in ensuring an exquisite groomed golf course and
accommodating club house.

The mission of our Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation Department is to celebrate <strong>the</strong> lives
of those challenged by heart and lung disease, and to help <strong>the</strong>m manage <strong>the</strong>ir diseases
through such things as exercise training, lifestyle modification, proper nutrition and
stress reduction.
Through <strong>the</strong> Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital Foundation’s Step-by-Step Program,
you have <strong>the</strong> ability to honor a friend or family member through your donations, as
well as to help patients who lack <strong>the</strong> financial means to participate in <strong>the</strong>se potentially
life-saving services.

BirthPlace Donation
The Obstetrics Department is pleased to show appreciation
to donor Connie Mastin, for her generous contribution of
handmade baby clo<strong>the</strong>s to The BirthPlace. Connie felt
compelled to share her hand working and seamstress talents
for bereavement and low birth weight babies born at Hugh
Chatham Memorial Hospital. Connie stated that being able to
craft this clothing is one of <strong>the</strong> greatest joys in her life. Tammie
Bodenhamer, Obstetrics Clinical Nurse Manager, added,
“It is difficult to find clo<strong>the</strong>s for babies born under <strong>the</strong>se
circumstances. We are so very appreciative for Ms. Mastin’s
heartfelt generosity.” Pictured are obstetrics nursing staff from

Treadmill Donation
Dr. Paul Garrison, with Yadkin Valley Adult
Medicine, and his wife, Peggy, have graciously
donated a new treadmill to <strong>the</strong> Hospital’s Cardiac
Rehabilitation Program. The Garrisons are pictured
in <strong>the</strong> Cardiac Rehab Gymnasium, which opened in
January 2010 as a part of <strong>the</strong> facility’s expansion.
The Cardiac Rehab Program sees more than 70
participants weekly. Program Director Ali Wood
says, “Our Cardiac Rehab Program has impacted <strong>the</strong>
health, wellness, and quality of life of so many
members of our community.” For more information

Foundation Announces
New Scholarship
An anonymous donor has contributed
$2,000 to start a nursing scholarship.
The scholarship is to be given to a certified
nursing assistant who is ei<strong>the</strong>r currently
enrolled in a nursing program or has been
accepted to start a program. The scholarship
will honor <strong>the</strong> memory of Nyoaka Collins,
a nursing assistant who worked on 2nd
floor at <strong>the</strong> Hospital for many years.
Nyoaka passed away February 14, 2008.
The scholarship selection will be announced
during National Nursing Week in May
of this year.
