From the Office of Linda Martin: Some of you may be aware that our FAA Contract Tower funding was imperiled earlier this year due to sequestration cuts. However, many thanks to our fantastic legislative delegation and staff members from Sen. Mike Crapo, Sen. Jim Risch, and Cong. Mike Simpson, as they leveraged their efforts with other elected officials in other affected states (179 towers across multiple states) to get the funding reinstated by clarifying the “Congressional intent” of directed funding for TSA and FAA Contract Towers. As a result, that funding was extended to September 30, 2013. Also, as of 6/27/13 The Senate DOT/FAA appropriations bill for FY ’14, was approved by the full Senate Appropriations Committee, which includes $140.35 million in dedicated funding for the Contract Tower Program, including $10.35 million for the cost-share program. Locally, we have an opportunity to possibly expand air service from eastern Idaho to the Nampa/Boise area. We are seeking your attendance, comments, suggestions, and input! It will be considered by members of the Idaho Falls Planning Commission on June 18. The commission's recommendation then will be heard by the Idaho Falls City Council, possibly as early as July. Final approval for the 22-acre site rests with the council. LINE 2.0 Members Named On June 6 th Governor Otter announced the makeup of the new Leadership in Nuclear Energy Commission. LINE 2.0 will be responsible for enacting six recommendations made by the original LINE Commission. Members of the new panel, which will meet quarterly, include legislators, university representatives, INL officials and business leaders. The biggest distinction is the original commission was given a very
specific charge to evaluate the INL and the dynamics (of the nuclear energy industry) nationally. LINE 2.0 is charged with implementing those recommendations. The commission will leverage the expertise and research of the Idaho National Laboratory on a national stage, create new jobs and expand energy and technology sectors in the state, Otter said in the news release. The new commission also will feature ex-officio members: Scott Bedke, Idaho Speaker of the House. John Revier, Deputy Chief of Staff for U.S. Congressman Mike Simpson. Tom Perry, Legal Counsel for the Office of the Governor. Brian Whitlock, INL representative. Energy Communities Alliance Meeting About 40 community, national laboratory and private industry officials from around the country to took part in June’s Energy Communities Alliance meeting. The alliance is an organization of local governments that are adjacent to or affected by Department of Energy activities. The topic of discussion was how to prepare for any decisions regarding long-term nuclear waste storage solutions. It comes shortly after four U.S. senators requested public comment on draft nuclear waste management legislation addressing the need for a long-term solution for nuclear waste storage. That legislation includes establishing a process -- including soliciting states and communities to volunteer possible sites -- for developing an interim storage facility and a geological repository. New Processing Plant in Shelley a Boon for Local Economy With a unanimous vote of the Shelley City Council, the path was cleared for Golden Valley Natural to open a state-of-the-art meat processing plant in the Bingham County community. The Idaho Fallsbased company produces natural and organic smoked meat snacks, including beef, buffalo and turkey jerky. The company hopes to break ground on the more than 200,000-square-foot facility in August. If all goes as planned, it will begin operations in August 2014, ultimately adding 200 to 400 jobs. Once operational, the Shelley plant will provide a significant economic boost to Shelley and Bingham County, as well as throughout eastern Idaho. According to the Shelley Pioneer, the Idaho Department of Commerce estimated the new facility's annual economic impact would exceed $620,000 annually. Linx Now Offering Intercity Bus Connections Across Greater Yellowstone For the third consecutive summer, the Linx Regional Transportation Cooperative is providing affordable public transportation inside Yellowstone National Park and to and from its gateway communities. The Linx Bus in Yellowstone pilot demonstration has been expanded beyond the Park’s South Loop to include daily connections between West Yellowstone and Gardiner, Montana, and Cody and Jackson, Wyoming. The 2013 Linx Summer Service is slated to operate until September 30th. A Linx Bus in Yellowstone day pass costs $25.00 for multiple boardings inside the national park. One-way tickets on Gateway
