KOLLMANN: <strong>Gastropods</strong> <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lower</strong> <strong>Cretaceous</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Vorarlberg</strong>. A systematic review 57<br />
ty <strong>of</strong> large nerineaceans compared to Orgon (COSSMANN, lit. cit.; PETKOVIC, 1939)<br />
allows <strong>the</strong> assumption that shallow-water environments <strong>of</strong> high energy (see: KOLLMANN<br />
et al., 1991) were restricted to <strong>the</strong> Unterklien section, while o<strong>the</strong>r gastropod assemblages<br />
represent slightly deeper environments.<br />
3. Luitere Member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gams Formation<br />
Only "Nummgaultina" aff. dentata (DESHAYES) and Gyrodes gaultinus (d´ORBIGNY)<br />
have been recorded <strong>from</strong> this Member, which FÖLLMI & OUWEHAND, 1987, have dated<br />
as terminal <strong>Lower</strong> Aptian. Both taxa were originally described <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gault facies <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Paris Basin. Toge<strong>the</strong>r with o<strong>the</strong>r taxa, <strong>the</strong>y were also recorded by d´ORBIGNY, 1843,<br />
<strong>from</strong> Clansayes. The agreement <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> faunas supports <strong>the</strong> long-known fact that <strong>the</strong><br />
composition <strong>of</strong> assemblages is stable under stable conditions.<br />
4. Garschella Formation<br />
The "Helvetic Gault" <strong>of</strong> earlier authors has yielded <strong>the</strong> following taxa:<br />

Taxa which have been determined to <strong>the</strong> genus and species level agree with species<br />
known <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gault facies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> London-Paris Basin and <strong>from</strong> phosphatic and glauconitic<br />
sediments („greensands") <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jura and <strong>the</strong> Provence (d´ORBIGNY, 1842-43;<br />
PICTET & CAMPICHE, 1861-64). Compared to o<strong>the</strong>r areas, <strong>the</strong> diversity <strong>of</strong> gastropods in<br />
<strong>the</strong> Garschella Formation is low. This is partly due to <strong>the</strong> condensation during which<br />
most shells were dissolved.<br />
HANCOCK, 1975, considers <strong>the</strong> Gault facies as typical basinal. FÖLLMI, 1989, indicates<br />
<strong>the</strong> condensation to be a "fingerprint" <strong>of</strong> Tethyan (= Theian) currents. As mentioned<br />
under <strong>the</strong> Gemsmättli Member, <strong>the</strong> composition <strong>of</strong> marine bottom faunas below <strong>the</strong> top<br />
marine mixed layer seems to be ra<strong>the</strong>r uniform throughout Europe. This has also been<br />
stated for certain groups by MONGIN, 1979. By means <strong>of</strong> fossils, a differentiation<br />
between Theian and Kalaisian realms can <strong>the</strong>refore only be accomplished with top<br />
