Strategic Planning of
Information Systems
November 21-26, 2011

Programme on
Strategic Planning of Information Systems
November 21-26, 2011
Information Technology (IT) and Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) have witnessed prominent growth
in last few decades.
Mr. Som Mittal, President NASSCOM while sharing the report of strategic review 2011 mentions that the Indian IT-
BPO industry registered a growth of 19.2 per cent in FY2011. Exports are estimated to grow by about 18.5 per cent in
FY2011 and reach USD 59 billion while the domestic segment (including hardware), grew by 21 per cent in FY2011,
to reach USD 28.8 billion.
Unlike a couple of years back, when IT was seen as a strategic tool for Fortune 500 companies only, IT has grabbed
the central stage of attention of the SME (Small and Medium Enterprise) sector enterprises as well. The presence and
usage of Internet has made the penetration and access of IT ubiquitous, even at homes and is being used by people
of all age groups.
With the extent of usage of IT on the rise, it is often argued that IT is being used as a commodity and hence, is failing
to provide sustainable strategic advantage to the organizations. With these arguments in place, it becomes certain
that though technology has still got significant focus in various forms, decision makers have lagged in understanding
the overall linkage of IT with the overall organizational goals, strategy, and people. Whether, it is aligning IT with
business strategy or designing IT organization structure, the managerial issues have not received attention that it
deserves. Lack of managerial inputs to people from technical background may be one reason for this and there are
enough gaps that need immediate attention.
This gap is what this programme aims to bridge up. In this programme, we aim at bringing in managerial orientation
amongst executives from technical backgrounds. The programme will try to lay thrust on discussing issues in which
executives have to make choices between various technical alternatives coherent with the broad organizational goal
being kept in mind.
For
The programme is designed for IS/IT managers interested to understand relationship between business strategy and
IT strategy. It deals with managerial issues in IT such as creating business models with IT, planning for hardware
and software, vendor selection, risk evaluation of IT projects, etc. The participants will ideally be in middle level IT
positions in non-software companies where IT/MIS is an important function.
Objectives
• To understand the process of formulating and implementing an IT/IS strategy in the organizations.
