To be awarded maximum points for your English skills you will need to submit<br />
the results <strong>of</strong> an IELTS test in which you scored at least 7 points for each <strong>of</strong> the<br />
4 components – ‘pr<strong>of</strong>icient’ English.<br />
OET test results can also be provided. Health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals require an Occupational<br />
English Test (OET) as part <strong>of</strong> their skills assessment process. Check the department’s<br />
website www.immi.gov.au/skilled/ for information on the OET score that is accepted as<br />
being equivalent to ‘pr<strong>of</strong>icient’ English.<br />
To be assessed as having ‘competent English’ if you are not the holder <strong>of</strong> a specified<br />
passport you will need to submit the results <strong>of</strong> an IELTS test in which you scored at least<br />
6 points for each <strong>of</strong> the 4 components or an equivalent result in an OET test.<br />
Both IELTS and the OET impose charges for conducting these tests. Further information<br />
on IELTS and the OET is available on their websites www.ielts.org (IELTS) or<br />
www.oet.com.au (OET).<br />

You and members <strong>of</strong> your family may be required to undergo a medical and x-ray<br />
examination. The cost <strong>of</strong> the examination is a matter between you and the doctor<br />
undertaking the examination.<br />
You should also be prepared to pay other costs associated with your application, such<br />
as those required to obtain a character clearance (see page 34) from authorities in your<br />
country, and the cost <strong>of</strong> certified translations <strong>of</strong> some documents.<br />
