The Arrival at the Mission<br />
In the life of a saint, destiny and destination neatly coincide. In<br />
1605, glancing from aboard Sao Jacinto, a young Jesuit missionary,<br />
Roberto Nobili, educated in Rome must have felt, as he saw the<br />
littoral of the Konkan coast and the Portuguese colonial town of Goa<br />
approaching, the same urgency of discovering a corresponding geographical<br />
mission tó complement his spiritual ambitions. 1 Years of<br />
adolescent trials were behind him. As the eldest son and heir of an<br />
aristocratic family from Montepulciano, his decision early in life to<br />
join the Society of Jesus and become a missionary in India had initially<br />
met with disapproval from his kinsmen. 2 Only after a series of<br />
dramatic escapes and mysterious concealment after the fashion of a<br />
would-be saint (or martyr), his family finallybowed to his wishes. He<br />
then successfully completed the novitiate training in Naples and<br />
theological studies in Rome before leaving Europe for good. 3<br />
As soon as he had reached his destination; the Asian province of<br />
the Society of Jesus, Nobili prayed fervently for 'new and wonderful<br />
