The new <strong>ISTA</strong> Executive Committee<br />

Susan R. Maxon<br />

Member-at-Large<br />

Susan Maxon has been a member of the<br />

ECOM since 2004. She has worked for the<br />

United States Department of Agriculture<br />

throughout her professional career. She<br />

joined the USDA Agricultural Research<br />

Service, <strong>Seed</strong> Research Laboratory,<br />

Beltsville, Maryland (<strong>ISTA</strong> Member<br />

Laboratory) in 1975, working for Dr.<br />

Lowell Woodstock, who was Chair of<br />

the <strong>ISTA</strong> Vigour Committee at that time.<br />

She transferred to the <strong>Seed</strong> Regulatory<br />

and Testing Branch of the Agriculture<br />

Marketing Service (AMS) in 1976 as a<br />

biological laboratory technician in germination<br />

testing, but in 1977 was reclassified<br />

to the position of botanist and about that<br />

time added noxious weed seed examinations<br />

and purity testing to her duties.<br />

From 1984 to the present she has taught<br />

more than 25 Federal <strong>Seed</strong> Schools, with<br />

topics including purity testing, seed identification<br />

and germination testing, and has<br />

been responsible for identification of unknown<br />

seeds since 1988. Over the years,<br />

she has been a member of several committees<br />

of the Association of Official <strong>Seed</strong><br />

Analysts (AOSA) and <strong>ISTA</strong>. Since 1989,<br />

her responsibilities have included various<br />

aspects of <strong>ISTA</strong> lab accreditation within<br />

the Branch (USDL01). Other international<br />

activities include the OECD <strong>Seed</strong> Schemes,<br />

in which she represented the USA from<br />

2001 to 2006.<br />

Since 2003, Susan Maxon has been<br />

Assistant Branch Chief and Laboratory<br />

Supervisor at the AMS, Gastonia, <strong>No</strong>rth<br />

Carolina, and also Designated Member<br />

for the USA at <strong>ISTA</strong> meetings. She has<br />

also been a member of the <strong>ISTA</strong> Coated<br />

<strong>Seed</strong> Committee (1983–86) and the <strong>ISTA</strong><br />

Germination Committee (1992-99).<br />

Jorge Rosales King is an agricultural engineer.<br />

During his professional career, he<br />

has been a field inspector, a laboratory analyst,<br />

<strong>ISTA</strong> has released a new layout of the<br />

membership certificate, which was introduced<br />

at the Annual Meeting in Bologna.<br />

The modified certificates are aimed at<br />

clearly indicating the category of <strong>ISTA</strong><br />

Membership: Laboratory Member,<br />

Personal Member, Associate Member and<br />

Corporate Member, with the unique membership<br />

identification code.<br />

The new certificate has space for four<br />

membership stickers for four membership<br />

years. As hitherto, the stickers prove the<br />

validity of the certificate. There have been<br />

no changes to the layout of the stickers.<br />

The new certificate will be issued to<br />

members in the coming membership year<br />

on payment of the annual membership fee,<br />

or in the case of changes in membership or<br />

Director since 1983. He is currently part of<br />

an MBA programme on <strong>Seed</strong> Technology<br />

from the Federal University of Pelotas,<br />

Brazil, in association with the Universidad<br />

Autónoma Gabriel René Moreno of Santa<br />

Cruz, Bolivia, and the <strong>International</strong> Center<br />

for <strong>Seed</strong>s PROSEMILLAS.<br />

Jorge is Bolivia’s national Designated<br />

Authority for <strong>ISTA</strong>, UPOV and the<br />

OECD. He gives a specialization course on<br />

seed technology at the Federal University<br />

of Pelotas, Brazil.<br />

He has been awarded top distinctions<br />

by Bolivia’s National <strong>Seed</strong> Program, the<br />

Latin American <strong>Seed</strong> Federation (FELAS)<br />

and the Federal University of Pelotas. •<br />
