Recommended movie of the month The Hunger Games Words by Sophie Leahy Dominating at the box office, The Hunger Games (2012) offers a rare example of a completely successful transition from book to screen. Director Gary Ross has remained faithful to his source material, catering to fans of the novel, but offers a comprehensive and clear tale that will also draw in those new to Games. “May the odds be ever in your favour” is the chilling cry repeated throughout film, a post-apocalyptic story based on a trilogy of novels by Suzanne Collins. In this dystopian fantasy world, America is divided into 12 districts and ruled by a distant metropolis known simply as the Capitol. Ever since a violent (yet ultimately unsuccessful) rebellion by the districts against the Capitol many years ago, the Hunger Games were invented as an instrument of control and means to keep the population in check. An annual occurrence, the Games see a group of underprivileged teenagers battle for their survival within the grounds of a confined forest, played out for the entertainment and enjoyment of the wealthy. Twenty-four teenagers enter, but only one leaves. One boy and one girl from each district are chosen as ‘tributes’ to take part in the Games – an extensive fight to the death. Contestants are given physical training and presentation guidance in order to secure sponsorship from those watching and betting for their win – the one piece of help that can provide support and relief and ultimately affect the outcome of the game. Filmed and televised live, people from each of the districts watch, hoping and praying that one of the contestants from their own district will be the sole survivor. The main audience, however, comes from the overly zealous citizens of the Capitol who lay bets and watch enthralled as one by one, the contestants drop. The life-and-death struggle of the contestants becomes must-see viewing. jetstar.com With gripping action that will keep you on the edge of your seat and scenery to take your breath away, the film ultimately follows the story of Katniss from District 12, one of the poorest regions of the country. When her younger sister’s name is chosen as a tribute, Katniss makes a definitive sacrifice and volunteers herself instead. As the story develops and the Hunger Games commence, we are witness to the raw energy of human nature and the juxtaposition of compassion and evil in the determination to win. Director Ross cuts the camera between the action in the arena to the sneaky organisation behind the scenes, with sudden changes to the rules and conditions undoubtedly affecting the outcome. According to the wishes of the Capitol, death can essentially be handed out via the virtual touch of a computer screen. The highly manipulated game-show style of the games also pursues the developing relationship of Katniss and her fellow District 12 tribute, Peeta. While there is the potential for this film to provide viewers with some biting political and social critique, director Ross doesn’t latch on. Rather, he chooses to amplify and explore the more emotional, human side to the story. Despite the foreign nature of this dystopian world, the connections made between each of the characters are still very real, very relatable, and very human.
