10 tracks
The 1986 Left Bank of New York set was the first time
Gourley had an opportunity to record in the United
States. Six of the ten selections feature Gourley in a trio
and the other four add Don Sickler and Ralph Moore
and are actually more exciting, partly due to the vintage
material.
“ It’s an unlikely story, but the most stunning jazz discovery in
a decade was unearthed at an Elks Lodge in Chelmsford, Mass.
The trove consisted of seven 12-inch acetate discs, on which was
recorded a 40-minute concert by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker
at Town Hall in New York on June 22, 1945.
This new Uptown CD provides further fascinating
examples of the ‘Orch-tette’ recorded in performance
at Birdland and in two studio sessions from which
nothing was ever released. Within a year, Gryce had
left the jazz world never to be seen again. These recordings
not only provide high quality music in the hardbop
genre but also serve as important and revealing
additions to Gryce’s legacy.
Richard Wyands, Julian Euell, Mickey Roker,
Just when it seemed like every last Charlie Parker live recording had been uncovered and issued, Uptown managed to
find another. This is a portion of a 1948 concert featured separate sets by Dixieland jazz musicians and boppers. The historic
nature of this concert and the detailed liner notes by Ira Gitler, Ross Firestone, and Ron Fritts make this an essential
CD for serious bop fans. - Ken Dryden, All Music Guide
