GUIDELINE TO CONSTRUCTION LUBRICATION Introduction The Construction Industry is known for relative large fuel and lubricant consumption. It is therefore an industry where most oil companies are eager to get business. In the construction industry most lubricants available are used. In some cases power is generated on site. Many companies service their own machines and vehicles, hydraulic systems, central lubrication systems, extreme pressure applications, open lubricating systems and so on. VPS products and services, provide full service to the needs of the construction industry and the vehicles and equipment on which it depends – fleets of (large haul) trucks and loaders, draglines and shovels etc.. We can provide the products and the experience to ensure you select and apply the right lubrication to ensure maximum effectiveness and equipment longevity for any construction operation. The Lubricants used in the Construction Industry can be divided in the following categories: 1. Diesel Powered Engines 2. Gears 3. Greases 4. Hydraulics 5. Miscellaneous 1. Diesel-powered Engines Construction sites are often found in remote areas. The quality of the diesel fuel used often leaves a lot to be desired. The sulphuric content of the diesel fuel should be neutralized by the engine oil used. Therefore a high TBN Diesel Engine Oil should be applied. Distinction is made between older and newer equipment. For the older equipment, an SF/CD S3 with a TBN of 10 is suitable. For newer equipment, CF, CG- 4, CI-4 and CI-4+ are the standard. The newer the equipment, the higher the output (relative) and the more expectations to the longevity of the lubricant. Larger Medium Speed Diesel generators require marine like Dig equipment lubricants with a high TBN. Mostly in a monograde SAE 40 with a total base number varying from 6 to 50. The oils should be compatible with different qualities of residual fuel, have an excellent thermal and oxidation stability and have a high load carrying capacity. Diesel Generator Relevant VPS products: Rymco® Helios XHD (Mineral CG-4 engine oil) Rymco® Endurox series (CI-4 engine oil with ACEA E5/E6/E7 in mineral, semi –and full synthetic grade) Rymco® Marlub series (High TBN Monograde Medium Speed Diesel Engine Oils) 2. Gears From central lubrication to automotive gears. All is present in the construction industry. In both closed and open systems a variety of different lubricants is being used. Extreme pressure, reliability, consistency and performance are key factors the lubricant should comply to. GUIDELINE TO CONSTRUCTION LUBRICATION 3. Greases Extreme pressure, water contamination, dust, shocks, high loads. Construction sites are a beautiful playground for grease developers. Although in many cases a Lithium EP Grease would be good enough for the job, a Lithium Complex or a Polyurea Grease could be recommended. Circumstances can change rapidly. To define properties vis-à-vis dust or water is not very difficult but what if the dust gets wet and sticky? Better safe than sorry and apply a grease of which one is sure it will do the job under all possible circumstances. Relevant VPS products: Rymco® Lindax EP series (Multi Purpose Lithium EP grease in different NLGI-grades) Rymco® Caldax WR-2 (Multi Purpose Lithium/Calcium grease (water resistant)) Rymco® Comdax 2 (Lithium Complex grease NLGI-2, good water resistance) Rymco® Comdax EP-2 ((Lithium Complex grease NLGI-2 with ISO 460 base oil, excellent water resistance) Matrix® Poly HT-2 (Polyurea Grease – excellent multipurpose but designed for Hi-Temp) Matrix® Grease Barium Complex (Irregular shock loads, ultimate water resistance, excellent multi purpose, designed to last) 4. Hydraulics Lifting, digging, breaking, moving. All these actions need proper lubrication and are in most cases Hydraulic. There are many factors that define what product to use. Temperature vs. Viscosity, Loads vs. EP, Heat vs. Fire- Resistance but also the environmental issue is very important. VPS offers a wide range of hydraulic oils in most of the viscosity grades. Although the hydraulic oil is often considered a me-too product on which price is the only way to differentiate, many applications are found where a slight improvement in oil quality leads to huge maintenance cost savings. Relevant VPS products: Rymco® Hydra AW series (HLP Hydraulic fluids in a range of ISO grades) Rymco® Hydra HVI series (HVI Hydraulic fluids in a range of ISO grades) Rymco® Hydra HD (Heavy Duty Hydraulic Oil also suitable as light engine oil) Matrix® Eco VE (Bio degradable oil based on vegetable oil) Matrix® Ecomax SE (Bio degradable oil based on synthetic esters) Matrix® Ecotop XSE (Bio degradable oil based on saturated esters – LONGLIFE) Matrix® Hydromax HT (Readily biodegradable oil based on HT Base Oil) 5. Miscellaneous The images below show some of the used in construction. The variety is pretty much translated in the aforementioned wide range of lubricants used and needed in this industry. Hydraulic systems, Compressors, Vacuum pumps, Wire Ropes, Conveyor Belts are all systems to be lubricated in the Construction Industry.
