Investing in an Iowa Hunting License and Habitat Fee Thank you for buying a hunting license and supporting Iowa’s traditional outdoor sports. As a hunter, you and 250,000 other hunters take the lead in conservation through your license dollars and the taxes paid on ammunition and hunting equipment. Money from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses goes into the Fish and Wildlife Trust Fund; a constitutionally protected fund that can only be spent to expand hunting and fishing opportunities, like acquiring public hunting ground, conducting research and improving existing areas for wildlife and hunters. Iowa’s natural resources are something to be celebrated and embraced as an important component in our quality of life, our economic development and our environmental health. The Fish and Wildlife Trust Fund has played a leading role in bringing back wild turkeys, Canada geese, river otters, trumpeter swans and peregrine falcons. The bag limit for river otters was reduced from 3 to 2 to prevent too many river otters from being taken in any one area. COVER PHOTO: A military hero in an Iowa field near Lakota. A first time pheasant hunting leaves a lifetime impression for the wounded service members who step into Iowa fields and for the Iowans who come together to welcome them. Hunting for Heroes, part of the Wounded Warrior program, gets recovering military away from the routine of medical appointments and rehabilitation for a few days. As they arrive in Iowa, they receive heroes’ welcomes; everything from guided pheasant hunts to a small town Iowa banquet with 400 new friends. Photo by Joe Wilkinson. • The list of open areas for bobcats increased to include Audubon, Crawford, Dallas, Iowa, Muscatine and Poweshiek counties. • Starting this year, only the intact skull or complete lower jaw of otters and bobcats will be collected for population monitoring purposes. (p. 21) • Three Mile Lake, Union County, and Lake Sugema, Van Buren County, were removed from the list of waterfowl refuges. Union Hills Wildlife Management Area was added to the list. A small portion of the Union Hills WMA will become a waterfowl refuge with the goal of improving the number of waterfowl that stay in the area during the fall migration. The majority of the area will remain open to hunting. • The pigeon season will be open year round to allow dove hunters the opportunity to take pigeons while dove hunting.
