Chapter <strong>12</strong>: Harvested Wood Products
As the quantity −44/<strong>12</strong> ● ∆(AFOLU without HWP) is reported elsewhere, the HWP Contribution to be reported
is given by Equation <strong>12</strong>A.4:
EQUATION <strong>12</strong>A.4
ATMOSPHERIC FLOW APPROACH: HWP CONTRIBUTION
HWP Contribution to AFOLU Net CO 2 emissions AFA = −44/<strong>12</strong> ● [∆C HWP IUDC + ∆C HWP SWDSDC +
P EX − P IM + O]
or
HWP Contribution to AFOLU Net CO 2 emissions AFA = -44/<strong>12</strong> ● [H - ↑C HWP DC ]
In the specific case when stock change of carbon in the HWP pools is zero the carbon imports minus carbon
exports must still be reported as the HWP Contribution to AFOLU net CO 2 emissions (see Equation <strong>12</strong>A.4).
System boundary of the Production Approach.
Note: NEE = net ecosystem exchange of carbon, E DOM = carbon release to the atmosphere from the pools of domestically grown HWP in use
and in SWDS, E IM = carbon release to the atmosphere from the pools of imported HWP in use and in SWDS, E EX DOM = carbon release to the
atmosphere from the pools of domestically grown but exported HWP in use and in SWDS, H = carbon transfer in the form of <strong>harvested</strong> <strong>wood</strong>
biomass transported from harvest sites, P EX = carbon transfer in the form of HWP exports, P IM = carbon transfer in the form off HWP
imports, O = possible other cross-border carbon transfers from rest of AFOLU (assumed zero here). Note: Only those HWP in the export
markets that are produced from domestic round<strong>wood</strong> are within the system boundary, not those only processed in the reporting country but
made from imported round<strong>wood</strong>. The transfer P EX can in principle include both.
The Production Approach (PA) estimates changes in carbon stocks in the forest pool (and other <strong>wood</strong> producing
lands) of the reporting country and the <strong>wood</strong> <strong>products</strong> pool containing <strong>products</strong> made from <strong>wood</strong> <strong>harvested</strong> in
the reporting country. The <strong>wood</strong> <strong>products</strong> pool includes <strong>products</strong> made from domestic harvest that are be
exported and stored in uses in other countries. This approach inventories carbon in <strong>wood</strong> <strong>products</strong> from
domestically <strong>harvested</strong> <strong>wood</strong> only and does not provide a complete inventory of <strong>wood</strong> carbon in national stocks.
Because some of the stock changes reported by a country may occur in other countries (where exports are held),
the stock change report indicates when changes occur but not where they occur.
The system boundary of the Production Approach and the carbon pools under consideration are shown in Figure
<strong>12</strong>A.3. The national carbon dioxide emissions are approximated using Equation <strong>12</strong>A.5:
