CHET BAKER CHET IS BACK + 6 bonus tracks
DIS-135751 / 9.99 €
This CD presents Chet Baker’s complete original album Chet Is Back! (RCA Italy LP M10307), recorded in Rome three weeks after the trumpeter was released from jail for his ninth drug
bust. He is accompanied by a group of notorious European players, the most famous of which, Bobby Jaspar and René Thomas, had their own drug problems (Jaspar would die
from a heart attack on February 28, 1963, at the age of 37; Thomas would follow on January 3, 1975, aged 47).
As a bonus, a complete session recorded that same year by Baker mostly on vocals with an orchestra conducted by Ennio Morricone (celebrated for his soundtracks to the films of
Sergio Leone), and two rare tracks (only previously issued on a long out of print CD) recorded for the radio in studio conditions in Baden Baden, Germany, in 1960.
This release presents the complete original album Cannonball’s Bossa Nova (Riverside RLP9455), which was Cannonball Adderley’s contribution to the bossa nova craze that pervaded
the United States in the early 1960s. For this special occasion, he wasn’t backed by his usual group, but by an authentic bossa nova formation featuring celebrated Brazilian musicians,
like pianist Sergio Mendes, future Weather Report percussionist Dom Um Romao, and guitarist Durval Ferreira. Two alternate versions from the same sessions, as well as the
saxophonist’s earliest existing recording of his brother Nat Adderley’s “The Jive Samba” –taped by Cannonball’s regular group (featuring Nat)– have been included as bonus tracks.
The latter song would become a regular feature in the quintet’s repertoire.
As a further bonus, a complete session featuring Cannonball (who plays solos on all tracks) and Milt Jackson.
INCLUDES 16 -PAGE BOOKLET
Presented here in its entirety, the celebrated 1962 LP Ballads album (Impulse AS-32) was the last word in John Coltrane’s ballad playing and became an instant hit. One of the
most revolutionary saxophonists in jazz history, Coltrane was also a superb ballad player, capable of creating a very personal and intimate sound. This album features the leader
backed by the members of his classic quartet, with McCoy Tyner on piano, Jimmy Garrison on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums.
As a bonus, five earlier ballad performances by Trane, most of them in a quartet format (an amazing duet with Kenny Burrell is also included), and closing with the saxophonist’s
ultimate ballad composition, “Naima”.
