The pianist’s trio featured Jimmy Cobb on drums, and two different bassists, Ron Carter and Larry Ridley, replacing the regular member Paul Chambers, who for some reason couldn’t attend the shows. These performances took place a few months before the well-known recordings made by Montgomery and Kelly for Verve at the same venue, issued as Smokin’ at the Half Note. Among the many highlights, these programs contain an amazing unaccompanied guitar version of Wes’ Mi Cosa, his only live readings of All the Things You Are, and his own composition Cariba, as well as the guitarist’s only existing versions of Birks’ Works, Laura and I Remember You! Only Many is prevalently a CD for four hands, proof of the great complicity created in the studio at the time of the recording. Hypnotic, expanded themes, from Monk to Motian, in which improvisation and interplay reign supreme. Hersch and Alessi pursue each other, chase each other, overlap each other and slowly find increasingly different languages and expressive forms, resulting in an utterly fascinating, magnetic CD. LOUIS ARMSTRONG THE COMPLETE SATCH PLAYS FATS This release presents, for the first time ever on a single CD, all existing music from the perennial Louis Armstrong LP celebrating the music of Fats Waller: Satch Plays Fats (Columbia CL708). The first nine tracks comprise the original LP release, followed by all known alternate and partially alternate tracks, many of which have been long unavailable. Among them is a rare version of Honeysuckle Rose from the session, originally issued with dubbed applause on a compilation LP titled Columbia House Party. Louis is backed here by one of the best formations of his All Stars, with such outstanding musicians as Trummy Young, Barney Bigard and Billy Kyle. Also included is Tenor Madness, the only song with Coltrane (and the title track) from the classic Sonny Rollins album, which also features Chambers on bass. The great Philly Joe Jones is the drummer on all of these tracks. This release contains the outstanding album The Midnight Roll (Epic Stereo BA17034), featuring two All-Star small group formations including Roy Eldridge or Dukes of Dixieland’s Frank Assunto on trumpet, Buddy Tate on tenor sax, Ray Bryant on piano, and on some tracks, the illfated bassist Israel Crosby, who is best know for his work with Ahmad Jamal Trio. Crosby died of a heart attack on August 11, 1962, less than two months after recording this date. Mostly recorded without a piano (Mulligan and Brookmeyer play piano on just three tracks), these sides followed the standard set by Mulligan himself on his classic piano-less quartets with Chet Baker, Art Farmer, and with Brookmeyer, himself (the baritone saxophonist and trombonist’s first quartet attempts date from 1954). Two extra songs from an October 1962 concert in Paris by the same formation as the first LP have been added here as a bonus.
