In the evening service I had asked God to help me find my calling in life. My belief is that we need to get out there and spread the truth to as many people as possible. I know we have a tough job as the devil has blinded the eyes of so many people, but through God and persistence, I know it’s possible. It’s about brotherly and sisterly love. The Holy Spirit has been waking me up every night at 2am and I pray for two hours. This is without an alarm clock. I have been a believer for ten years, but never been woken up or responded to being woken up at this hour of the night. Praise God, after I pray in the night, I feel refreshed in the day. I’m a twenty-four year old graduate student living in Northern California. I found myself feeling very warm all over and maybe a little dizzy as I read about Ruth and Deborah who felt called to celibacy and who embraced it in the Jesus Army. I do whatever I feel led to do. Accountable to nobody, I am free to do what MY God is calling ME to do with MY life. The last thing I want is for a church to hold me back. “I already have everything I need to follow God – tapes from my favourite American preacher, CDs of the coolest Australian worship band and hundreds of books. I get Christian magazines and I go to all the latest conferences. “So I don’t need to be part of a church. I just want MY relationship with MY God.” WHAT UTTER NONSENSE! But many professing Christians today are like that – independent, self-centred spiritual consumers. They ask ‘What can I get out of God?’ rather than ‘What can I give?’ Having ‘opted out’ of church, they are moulded more by the flighty, non-committal ‘keep your options open’ spirit of the world rather than the sacrificial, self-giving ‘nailed to a cross’ love of Jesus. But to opt out of church is to opt out of God’s will! The church is God’s consuming passion, his bride, the dwelling place of his Spirit. If you ‘feel led’ not to commit, you’re not being led by the Spirit of Jesus! So burn your books, trash your tapes and cancel that conference! Give up your comfortable, crossless, consumer Christianity and get stuck in with God’s plan for your life: the church! RAAAAGH www.jesus.org.uk www.jesus.org.uk Jesus Life hears from mJa members about what makes them bubble with excitement... or boil with rage. IT WAS in a club on New Years Eve, 1990. In my rather “cosmic” state I was oblivious to the girls vying for my attention, dancing was boring me and the thought of another year in this scene filled me with dread. A vision kept coming to my head of a gang of coolly dressed men, standing aloof from the nonsense around. They were the talk of the town, mysterymen only identifiable by their manner, and possession of a white gold ring on their wedding fingers. “Jake”, I thought to myself, “you’re losing your mind”. Now, post-conversion, post- Jesus, I’m there: I’m celibate. The ring looks like white gold but is, in fact, silver. I’ve been through many fires of testing and I feel whole and established in it. Celibacy is an amazing gift. I have no natural desire or ability to be celibate, but God has worked this gift into my spirit and it reveals itself as I live it. I burn with a desire for the church. Each day I wake with a yearning to impact people’s lives with Jesus. At night my heart reaches out to God and I feel His presence in a deep way. Celibates have to walk through dark places with Jesus. We need to confront our loneliness and emptiness through His Cross. This gives us power in our witness, confidence to stand before the world. People say things about Jesus (“He’s a good man”, “He’s a prophet”). We answer that He is God incarnate; we know His very depths and He is more real than the things we see and touch. We are free to feel God’s heart for the people around us and build strong relationships that last into eternity. In our dark times we feel God’s heart toward us. Singleness is a gospel statement: it’s that true, it’s that serious. Jesus Christ has conquered death and is alive – and we know Him. JL Jesus Life Two/2006 Page 31
