EUROPEAN STUDIES
European Studies offers a broad range of courses
in modern European history, political economy,
international relations, and political and economic
thought. The program is concerned not only with
the European Union and its member states, but
also with other states in Central, Eastern and
Mediterranean Europe, including Russia. The
European Studies program is closely coordinated
between Washington and Bologna. Candidates
spend their first year at the Bologna Center and
follow a natural progression in courses from
Bologna to Washington.
European Studies majors take three
comprehensive examinations, which mingle the
politics, economics and history of Europe. The
subject matter of each comprehensive exam is
defined in the European Studies Syllabus, which
lists topics and contains a bibliography. The three
comprehensive examinations are: Modern
European History and Ideas, Pan-European
Political Economies, and Europe and the World
Since 1945. Candidates passing the comprehensive
examination in Modern European History and
Ideas are considered to have passed the school’s
core requirement in Evolution of the International
System; students passing the comprehensive
examination in Pan-European Political
Economies are considered to have met the core
requirement in Comparative National Systems.
