BOUGHTON MONCHELSEA - Kent Fallen

Captain (Retd) David Gordon Roome, L.V.O., R.N., died on Friday 27 March
2009, aged 86. Captain Roome’s funeral was held at the parish church of St.
Peter's, Boughton Monchelsea at 1430 hours on Tuesday 21 April 2009. He
was made a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order in the Queens Birthday
Honours in 1963. Following a conversation with the Reverend Geoff Davis,
who clearly had fond memories of, and patently still held the late Captain
Roome in high regard, the transcriber learned that Captain Roome had been
a prisoner of war of the Japanese during the Second World War. As a
Midshipman he had survived the sinking of H.M.S. Exeter on Sunday 1
March 1942, during ‘The Second Battle of the Java Sea.’ He was a long time
church and valued PCC member, and Churchwarden of St. Peter's church.
