Literacy Strategies in Action: Resources for Primary Teachers NETA Award for INSTRUCTIONAL INSERVICE Audience: CD-ROM: Professional development for primary teachers One copy has been distributed to every Kentucky elementary school; e-mail pd@ket.org for more information More than 100 video clips focus on phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension and on connecting writing to reading acquisition and teaching in a multi-age classroom. Produced by KET in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education, the resource package also includes teacher tips, a model of explicit instruction, and support materials. Literacy Without Limits: Help for Struggling Students, Grades 4-12 Audience: Professional development for teachers of grades 4-12 Website: www.literacywithoutlimits.org (also available on CD-ROM) More than 90 video clips in multiple content areas and classroom settings focus on effective instruction for students who struggle with literacy. ADDITIONAL Language Arts Resources Although KET’s GED Connection is designed for adult learners, its reading and writing components provide an excellent review of skills taught in high school English classes, including the writing process and the genres of nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and drama. Students and teachers also can benefit from “Locating Information” and “Reading for Information,” WorkKeys ® and GED ® Preparation collections available free at KET Teachers’ Domain. International Children’s Digital Library Search for International Children’s Digital Library in KET Teachers’ Domain and check out these titles: Axle the Freeway Cat, I Wouldn’t Tell a Lie, Magic Dogs of the Volcanoes, Finbo, Black Ear, Blond Ear, The Amazing Adventures of Equiano, Seya’s Song, The Little Weaver of Thái-Yên Village, and The Blue Sky. You can enhance your lessons with the supplemental resources that accompany these inspirational children’s books. Weston Woods When you search for Weston Woods in Discovery Education, you’ll find over 100 audiovisual versions of your favorite children’s books. As a narrator reads the text, the video shows the accompanying illustrations. Titles include: I Love You Like Crazy Cakes, So You Want to Be President?, If You Made a Million, Is Your Mama a Llama?, The Talking Eggs, Chrysanthemum’s First Day of School, and Shadows and Unspoken Words. Be sure to look at the related materials that go with the books. Most have a teachers’ guide and a quiz to supplement your instruction. Inspiring Middle School Literacy Between the Lions Both KET Teachers’ Domain and PBS LearningMedia have large collections of segments from this popular series for PreK-1 students, which was produced by WGBH. Just type “Between the Lions” into the keyword search on either site for a complete listing of all the segments. Meet the Author These PBS LearningMedia videos, found by doing a keyword search for “Meet the Author,” feature a number of children’s writers reading from their works and talking about what inspired them to become authors. Produced by WETA (Washington, D.C.), the videos are appropriate for a variety of grade levels from elementary through high school, depending upon the audience for the author’s books and the topic he or she is addressing. Poetry Everywhere Typing in “Poetry Everywhere” in the keyword search at PBS LearningMedia or KET Teachers’ Domain brings up this series of readings by contemporary poets including Adrienne Rich, W.S. Merwin, Rita Dove, and others, as well as readings of poems by Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman. The segments are intended for grades 7-12, but teachers should prescreen them for content, since a few contain adult subject matter. English/LANGUAGE ARTS These self-paced Teachers’ Domain lessons enhance the crosscurricular literacy skills of struggling readers in grade 5-8 through videos, interactives, note taking, reading, and writing. 2012/2013 Education Resources • 41
