Bayshore Community Hospital
Jennifer McKay volunteers with the Hazlet First Aid &
Rescue Squad, with a long-term goal of becoming a
bleeding. They immediately called
for surgeon David Dupree, M.D.
“I took one look at Jennifer and
saw she was a dying woman. Without
intervention, she probably had 15
minutes to live,” Dr. Dupree recalls.
Within minutes, he had her in the
operating room, where he found that
Jennifer had torn her spleen in two
and severed part of her pancreas.
Jennifer McKay was on her dad’s
boat docked in the Atlantic
Highlands Marina in June 2012
when the unexpected happened. The
21-year-old fell into an open engine
compartment, wedging a fiberglass
hatch against the left side of her
body. Although she had no visible
injuries, Jennifer knew immediately
that something was very wrong.
As a volunteer emergency medical
technician (EMT), Jennifer was used
to medical emergencies. And the
constant, growing pain in her belly was
a sign that she needed to get to the
emergency room fast. Although other
hospitals were much closer, Jennifer
instructed her dad to drive her straight
to Bayshore Community Hospital.
“As a local EMT, I know and trust
the doctors at Bayshore,” says the
Hazlet resident. “In my opinion, they
provide a higher level of care. It’s
where I knew I needed to be.”
Quick Action Needed
Jennifer arrived at Bayshore’s
Emergency Care Center in just 14
minutes, but her health had already
deteriorated. She was weak and
could barely talk, and her stomach
was distended. A team of doctors
and nurses led by Daniel Yu, M.D.,
quickly determined that Jennifer had a
ruptured spleen and extensive internal
Surgical Harmony for Team
In surgery, Dr. Dupree was able to
stop Jennifer’s internal bleeding. He
then removed her spleen and part
of her pancreas, which were not
necessary for her to live a normal life.
“Without the spectacular work of
the ER and operating teams, Jennifer
wouldn’t be here today. From the
time her accident occurred to the
moment we stabilized her in surgery,
only 45 minutes had passed,”
Dr. Dupree says. “I have performed
a lot of trauma surgery at other,
larger medical centers. Nothing I’ve
experienced was as smooth as this.
The operating staff worked together
in complete surgical harmony.”
Today, Jennifer is healthy and
back to volunteer work on the
Hazlet First Aid & Rescue Squad.
She also takes classes at Brookdale
Community College.
“The care I received was amazing,”
she says. “I believe in community
hospitals and love Bayshore.
Because of their quick action, I am
thankful to be alive.” •
