THE SPOTLIGHT
On Thursday 6 th March, music students once again flocked to the stage to host an
evening of musical and comic entertainment. An annual event, always organised
by students in Year 11 BTEC music, “The Spotlight” concert has continued to grow
in strength as students continue to push the standards ever higher. Presented in
a comical style with a dry wit, the hosts offered something fun and engaging in
between acts, as well as adding some audience involvement by randomly
selecting unsuspecting individuals. The performers offered a great night of
music, from slow emotional numbers, to hard hitting heavy metal; the evening
ending with an encore of the hit song `Happy` that really brightened the spirits
of all the audience and musicians. The organisers spent many hours planning and
co-ordinating a range of resources to present a very successful night with a fantastic audience turn out. All the staff in the faculty of
Creative Arts would like to give a massive well done to all involved; their hard work and dedication is again a testament to the passion and
drive in Creative Arts departments at Rushey Mead School.
CURVE VISIT AND STRING QUARTET CONCERT
On Thursday 13 th March Year 10 BTEC music students had the fantastic
opportunity to visit the Curve theatre, receiving a behind the scenes tour by one of
the Curve’s leading directors. Students were given the opportunity to learn all
about the workings of a professional organisation such as the Curve and learn
about the high tech venue and how complex team structures work together to put
on some of the high class productions they host. From here, students walked to the
Holy Trinity Church on Regent Road to witness one of the finest string quartets in
the world perform a series of fantastic pieces. The Brodsky String Quartet has a
world class reputation and their inspiring and masterful display was a fantastic
way to finish off the day.
OFF TO LONDON TO SEE THE QUEEN!
YEAR 10 DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING
On Friday 28 th February 2 Year 10 Health and Social Care students attended the Leicester/shire
Secondary Schools Heartsafe Programme. The event launched training and awareness in the use of
CPD and Defibrillators and our two Year 10 students have now been trained to use both. Following
the event, each school was given its own defibrillator and resuscitation dummies. The plan is that all
Year 10 students will be trained to use CPR and defibrillators as potentially these skills could one day
save someone’s life.
Three Year 8 students, accompanied by Mr Rule and Ms Limbachia, were selected by
the Royal Commonwealth Society to attend the Commonwealth Observance service
at Westminster Abbey on Monday 10 th March. They caught the train and the
underground to the large Abbey church, which is next to the Houses of Parliament,
and were lucky enough to have front row seats in the nave of the Abbey surrounded
by 1000 other school children from around the country. In attendance was the
Queen, Prince Phillip, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Edward and
the Countess of Wessex and Lord Sebastian Coe. Malala Yousafzai was also there
and she gave a thought provoking speech about equality around the world. There
were performances and singing based on teamwork and the Westminster Abbey
choirs and organist performed too. It was a real honour to be selected to attend
such an important event, to learn about the Commonwealth and the theme of ‘Team
Commonwealth’, and to see the Queen and her family so closely.
