Definitions<br />

Administrative Monetary Penalties (AMPs) – An economic enforcement tool of the Canadian Food Inspecon<br />

Agency to punish infracons under Health of Animals Regulaons.<br />

Animal Alliance of Canada (AAC) – A Toronto-based non-profit organizaon that campaigns at all levels of<br />

government to protect animals and the environment.<br />

Antimicrobial resistance – Occurs when valuable anmicrobial drugs lose their effecveness against bacteria<br />

due to overuse, including widespread use in farmed animals for disease prevenon and growth promoon.<br />

Battery cages – Cramped wire cages where laying hens are unable to perform natural behaviors including nesng,<br />

perching, stretching or dust bathing.<br />

Broiler chickens – Birds raised for meat in crowded barns, with the producon goal to add the most weight in the<br />

shortest me, on the least amount of feed.<br />

Canadian Coalition for <strong>Farm</strong> Animals (CCFA) – A Toronto-based non-profit organizaon that promotes the<br />

welfare of farmed animals through public educaon, legislave change and consumer choice.<br />

Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) – A federal government agency whose mission is to safeguard food,<br />

animals and plants, including the oversight of animal transportation.<br />

Canadian Codes of Practice – Coordinated by the Naonal <strong>Farm</strong> Animal Care Council, codes are voluntary<br />

standards for handling and rearing animals in Canada.<br />

Controlled Atmosphere Stunning/Killing (CAS/CAK) – Stunning and slaughter systems which use CO 2<br />

and inert<br />

gases to stun or kill animals. CO 2<br />

alone is aversive to animals, thus the need for a specified mix of inert gases for<br />

humane reasons.<br />

“Dolly” system – Stacked “drawers” (which replace plasc crates) for transporng birds to slaughter, involve<br />

less human handling of birds than crate systems.<br />
