The programme is designed to provide candidates with a deeper understanding <strong>of</strong> the issues in<br />

the core subjects <strong>of</strong> Constitutional and Administrative <strong>Law</strong>, in addition to others, to enable them<br />

to:<br />

• Provide more effective representation before international tribunals, regional courts and<br />

the CCJ;<br />

• Render more enlightened decisions in the discharge <strong>of</strong> their <strong>of</strong>fices as Senior Managers<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Public Service;<br />

• Give adequate and effective legal and policy advice to governments and their clients; and<br />

• Contribute to the development <strong>of</strong> a regional jurisprudence in the area <strong>of</strong> Public <strong>Law</strong>.<br />

Entry Requirements<br />

The following persons are eligible to apply for admission into this LLM programme:<br />

• Graduates <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> the West Indies holding the LL.B. degree;<br />

• Graduates <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> the West Indies or <strong>of</strong> an approved University holding a<br />

degree which includes such law subjects as shall satisfy the Board for Graduate Studies<br />

and Research;<br />

• Graduates <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> the West Indies or <strong>of</strong> an approved University, who have<br />

obtained a pr<strong>of</strong>essional legal qualification and are admitted to practice in any part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Commonwealth and in any CARICOM country;<br />

• Persons who having obtained a pr<strong>of</strong>essional legal qualification, are admitted to practice<br />

in any part <strong>of</strong> the Commonwealth, and who have also been certified as being in practice<br />

for a minimum <strong>of</strong> five years;<br />

• Graduates <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> the West Indies or <strong>of</strong> an approved University, who satisfy<br />

the Board for Graduate Studies and Research <strong>of</strong> their capability to undertake the course<br />

<strong>of</strong> study leading to the award <strong>of</strong> the LL.M. degree.<br />

A person who applies for admittance to the LL.M. programme and who does not satisfy the<br />

criteria for the LL.M. but who has satisfied the Board for Graduate Studies and Research <strong>of</strong> his<br />

or her capability to undertake the course <strong>of</strong> study leading to the award <strong>of</strong> the Graduate Diploma<br />

in Public <strong>Law</strong> may be admitted to read for the Graduate Diploma.<br />

Qualifying Examination<br />

Applicants may, at the discretion <strong>of</strong> the Board for Graduate Studies and Research, be required to<br />

take a qualifying examination.<br />

The language <strong>of</strong> instruction is English and applicants whose native language is not English may<br />

be required to take an English Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency Test set on behalf <strong>of</strong> the Board for Graduate Studies<br />

and Research.<br />

Time <strong>of</strong> Entry<br />

Candidates may enter these programmes either in Semester I or Semester II.<br />
