The future of bus<strong>in</strong>ess is <strong>green</strong> bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

Reward<strong>in</strong>g Europe’s best <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>green</strong> <strong>in</strong>novation<br />

The European Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Awards for the Environment are<br />

awarded by the European Commission every two years<br />

and aim to recognize and reward European companies which<br />

set an example by successfully br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g together <strong>in</strong>novation,<br />

economic viability and environmental concerns.<br />

The scheme comprises four award categories <strong>in</strong> which companies<br />

are rewarded for management practices, products, processes<br />

and <strong>in</strong>ternational co-operation activities, which contribute<br />

to economic and social development without detriment to<br />

the environment.<br />

To be eligible for competition <strong>in</strong> the European Bus<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

Awards for the Environment, companies first have to succeed<br />

<strong>in</strong> the national award schemes which are organised<br />

throughout Europe every year. This means that the companies<br />

awarded the European prize are ‘the best of the best’; the most<br />

far-sighted, responsible and <strong>in</strong>novative across Europe.<br />

Participation is open to companies from all EU member states<br />

and the candidate countries Bulgaria, Romania and Turkey.<br />

The submission of entries to the European level awards competition<br />

is managed by national coord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g bodies.<br />

Companies from 23 European countries have engaged <strong>in</strong> the<br />

2006 edition of the European Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Awards for the<br />

Environment and a total of 139 entries were received. This is<br />

the highest number of entries submitted <strong>in</strong> the 19 year history<br />

of the European Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Awards for the Environment<br />

(launched <strong>in</strong> 1987 under the name European Better Awards<br />

for Industry) and is an <strong>in</strong>dication of bus<strong>in</strong>esses’ grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> tak<strong>in</strong>g care of the environment.<br />

The 2006 Bus<strong>in</strong>ess Awards for the Environment Jury<br />

An <strong>in</strong>dependent panel of 12 jurors from across Europe met <strong>in</strong><br />

Vienna, Austria, on 21 – 22 February 2006 to assess and evaluate the<br />

139 entries submitted for this year’s award.<br />

The Jury consists of representatives from <strong>in</strong>dustry, NGOs, academia<br />

and the public authorities. All Jury members have environmental<br />

matters as their field of expertise.<br />

Industrial association TUSIAD, Bogazici University, Institute of<br />

Environmental Sciences.<br />

Environmental Scientist and Independent Consultant to the UK<br />

Government on environmental issues, Fellow of the Royal Society for<br />
