Format of the Regional Reports Species name (major rarities in all-caps): significance of record (optional; see below), number of individuals (if more than one), location, date, observer initials. Abbreviations used for “significance” terms include: high = high count(s) for season all-time high = all-time high for that season in that region (not necessarily for entire state) low = an unusually low total late = somewhat or unusually late all-time late = all-time late for that region early = somewhat or unusually early all-time early = all-time early for that region dep = last record from that season, although not unusually late (listed only if of some significance) arr = first record from that season, although not unusually early (listed only if of some significance) Within a given species, records with a similar significance (e.g., seasonal high counts) are clumped together, separated by commas, and usually ordered by date. It was another spring of what for the last decade has been “normal” weather: cool and wet - though there were two 90-degree days in late April - and unsettled weather patterns in the southeast of the country may have affected Neotropic migration patterns up here. Dismal conditions far to the north may have also been a factor with other birds. Nonetheless, several observers reported strong migration days on 19 April, 3 May, 9 May, 12 May, 14 May, and 18 May; several of these were on drizzly, foggy days. Rich Kane witnessed a big flight of 100+ redstarts on 3 May along the Delaware River south of Belvidere; and another of Willow Flycatchers, Indigo Buntings, Magnolia Warblers, and Hooded Warblers in northwest Hunterdon and southern Warren Counties on 15 May. The big story was not the movements of Neotropical migrants, but about a northern species that moved south in huge numbers during the fall and winter of 2008-2009, and remained in force throughout the spring all over the region: Pine Siskin. Many observers noted that siskins often outnumbered American Goldfinches, even in May; they drowned goldfinches out in song and muscled them away from feeders. There were three confirmed Pine Siskin nestings, all in Morris: in northern white cedars (arbor vitae) in Rockaway Borough; in a Norway spruce at Picatinny Arsenal in Rockaway Twp; and a fledgling was seen begging food from an adult at a Randolph feeder on 17 May. There must have been more in Stokes, High Point, and the Delaware Water Gap, though none were reported. The bulk of the waterfowl migration was seemingly over by the end of February, and most numbers reported were unremarkable, though there were several notable species sightings, including 2 drake Eurasian Wigeons at Hyper Humus Swamp and a Eurasian Green-winged Teal in Readington Twp. There were only three Redhead sightings and only one sighting of the declining Canvasback. Spruce Run had a late-date high count of 20 Red-breasted Mergansers (just one male). The sole report of Ruffed Grouse was of a drumming male at the south end of the Hamilton Trail near the Old Mine Road at Millbrook on 2 and 9 May. An Eared Grebe coming into breeding plumage was again reported from Round Valley Reservoir starting on 4 March, and several Red-necked Grebes were sighted, all in mid- to late- March. A very wayward Northern Gannet on Spruce Run Reservoir on 3 May was the first Hunterdon record, and possibly the first regional record as well. A Sandhill Crane visited Black Dirt Marsh in Wantage on 10 April; this is an area where the cranes have appeared in previous years. Spruce Run Reservoir was again the place to be for migrant gulls and terns. Up to 4 Little Gulls and an impressive triple-digit count of Bonaparte’s Gulls were recorded there during the first half of April; both Iceland and Glaucous Gulls were around in March and April as well; significant numbers of Lesser Vol. XXXV, no. 4 — 93
