Use the Cramer Defense Scale to assess three levels of defense configuration with the TAT. 4. Discuss how these three measures become integrated with one another using a case example. 5. Smith, Ph.D. Arizona State University Tempe, AZ In the current era of evidence-based practice and managed care, significant accountability has been placed on providers to demonstrate the usefulness and effectiveness of psychological services. This requirement highlights the historical divide between professional practice and psychological research, particularly traditional group comparison designs used for null hypothesis testing, which are unfeasible in the majority of applied settings and do very little to reveal how individual clients respond to treatment. The single-subject design bridges the gap between research and clinical practice by providing interventionists with a robust, client centered means of tracking and evaluating improvement using robust and accessible analytic procedures. In the single-subject experiment, there are three approaches to evaluating whether observed clinical improvement is notable: (1) testing the improvement against the null hypothesis using methods such as Simulation Modeling Analysis (SMA; Borckardt et al., 2008); (2) testing it against the criterion measure’s norms (e.g., RCI; Jacobsen et al., 1999); and (3) testing the meaningfulness or clinical significance of the improvement (Kazdin, 2006). In this workshop, an introduction to single-subject designs applicable to real-world clinical situations and a tutorial on how to analyze repeated measurement data, commonly referred to as a time-series, with SMA, a freely available software package designed specifically for 14 / SPA Annual Convention clinicians and applied clinical researchers. Case examples are used to illustrate how null hypothesis testing, criterion norms, and meaningfulness approaches can be used together to give a robust depiction of clinical change and its importance. Participants in this workshop will (a) gain the necessary conceptual and pragmatic knowledge to effectively conduct single-case experiments in their respective clinical settings, (b) be able to use SMA software to analyze single-subject time-series data, (c) be able to design a sound research experiment in order to make valid causal inferences, and (d) appreciate the distinctive contributions of the three approaches to evaluating clinical improvement. The workshop is intended for practitioners and clinical researchers of all levels desiring to conduct single-case experiments in the study of the effectiveness of psychological services. The presenter is well published in this area and reviews of this workshop at the 2012 meeting of the Society indicate that participants were highly satisfied. Participation requires only introductory knowledge of single-case designs. Attendees are encouraged to bring questions regarding how they might conduct this research in their clinical practice or research setting. Goals and Objectives: 1. Hertz Memorial is a tribute to Dr. Hertz for her long-term professional contributions to personality assessment, and is presented by the Society each year in honor of a deceased eminence from the field of personality assessment. This year’s honoree, David McClelland, Ph.D. (May 20, 1917 – March 27, 1998), was an American psychological theorist, noted for his work on Need Theory, publishing a number of works in the 1950s-1990s and developing new scoring systems for the Thematic Apperception Test and its descendants.
