Landscapes unique in the world "Les trois Salazes" © Serge Gélabert As for the cirque of Salazie, it is the easiest to reach. New sights appear at each bend on the road leading to the village of Hell- Bourg. You’ll be impressed by the mountainsides flanked with trellises of chayote fruit and watercress. Here is also where you can admire the Voile de la Mariée, one of the island’s most beautiful waterfalls which cascades down the fern-covered slopes all year round. Then you’ll find yourself under the charm of pretty Creole houses, complimented by divine gardens. The Piton d’Anchaing stands out in the middle of the cirque, a huge imposing rock separate from the rest - its outline looks a little like the silhouette of an ancestor resting in peace, and its legend tells the story of the escaped slaves Anchaing and Eva... © Serge Gélabert Creole house in Hell-Bourg The cirque of Cilaos, majestic and grandiose. A mountain resort and town with multiple sporting facilities dotted around the countryside. It is the starting-point for around 80km of footpaths, from the easiest to the most demanding, such as the ascension of the Piton des Neiges. Cilaos is also a spa town, with the island’s only active thermal establishment. Its particularly thirstquenching sparkling water can be found in bottles everywhere. Full of surprises, the cirque is also home to fine wines and lentils, both cultivated traditionally by hand. As cotton clouds begin to form, late afternoon is a fine time to visit some handcraft centres such as the Maison de la Broderie (Embroidery house), the wine cellars or the sculpture and copper-engraving workshops.
