Miss North Carolina Adrienne Core Wins Preliminary Talent at Miss America with Clogging!
Miss North Carolina Adrienne Core was
named preliminary talent winner for her clogging
performance during the first night of competition
of the 2011 Miss America Pageant at Planet
Hollywood Resort & Casino in Las
Vegas.
Core, a 2010 N.C. State University
graduate and a native of Erwin,
North Carolina, received a $2,000
scholarship for the achievement. She
hopes to earn her master’s degree
in mathematics education at North
Carolina State University.
“It is very unusual. ... It’s more
of contemporary clogging, more
than the traditional clogging you
would be used to,” Core said. “It
is to ‘Soul Man’ from the Blues
Brothers, so that’s also a different
twist on clogging.” Adrienne
worked with clogger Mike Curtis
on her final choreography
for the number. Curtis is a
member of the clogging group
ALL THAT, who were finalists
on “America’s Got Talent,”
and have appeared on many
television shows and talent
contests and who now perform regularly at the
Carolina Opry in Myrtle beach, South Carolina.
Core is the daughter of Beverly Core and the
late Charles Core, who died of cancer. Core
competed in memory of her father, Charles, who
died of cancer when she was 18.
“He was such a strong part of my life that I
wanted to take that experience and share that
with people,” she said. “Cancer is not always
something that is sad, but we can give hope and
inspire people to live every day, every second of
our lives to the best of our abilities.” To honor
him, Core supports the V Foundation, educating
people about the importance of cancer research.
While studying at North Carolina State
University, Core was president of the NCSU
Wolfpack Clogging Team. The team began in
1989 under the direction of Marsha Lester and
first performed at a women’s basketball game in
the university’s Reynold’s Coliseum. From that
point on, the team has been a highly recognized
and respected organization on campus. The
Clogging Hall of Fame) competition circuit,
and recently traveled to Las Vegas to compete
at the C.C.A. (Clogging Champions of
America) Las Vegas Invitational. In
addition to competitions, the team has
been very dedicated to community
service in Raleigh, North Carolina and
surrounding areas.
Core will be joining forces with
the Wolfpack Clogging team to host
the 2011 V Foundation ‘Clogging
for a Cure’ competition, to be held
on June 4, 2011 in the Raleigh
Convention Center in Downtown
Raleigh. The competition will be
C.C.A. sanctioned event and all
proceeds from the competition
go to the V Foundation for
Cancer Research. If you
would like to donate to the
V Foundation, or would
the “Clogging for a Cure”
event, please contact Donna
Clogging Student Director Derek Starnes at
The pageant finals were held on January 15,
