Part of that effort is to identify a block captain or key contact person for each block or small contiguous group of blocks. This person or family would know their neighbors, have contact information (home phone, cell phone(s), e- mail, etc.) and would be aware of any special circumstances, such as long trips away or serious medical conditions. The block captain would be integrated into a communication network presently being developed so that if an emergency happens, the block captain could contact a central SVCA person or the SVCA could get in contact with that block captain. If you are willing to serve in that capacity for your immediate neighborhood, please contact Barb Audley, chair of the SVCA Disaster Preparedness Committee, with your contact information (name, house and mail address, phones, e-mail, etc.) and proposed neighborhood description (street names (Ages 6-17): Home schooled youth come together and socialize, play games, read, or just have fun; Mon-Fri, 12–1 p.m.; Family Fun Zone. We anticipate a short meeting sometime this winter to get organized and make sure everyone is informed about processes. Then, we will periodically check electronically to make sure the network is still in place. Hopefully, we will never have to use this system in a real emergency. But we do need to be prepared! Please pass this request on to friends and neighbors throughout the valley. We need lots of volunteers to keep each block captain’s area small and nearby. Thank you in advance for your participation. Audley can be contacted at 647-1693 or via e-mail at barbaudley@yahoo.com. This project has traditionally been the primary source of donations to the Scouts of Troop and Pack 19. These funds have been instrumental in supporting the troop and pack to continue their service, providing a healthy activity to the youth in the area. In past years, the scouts with their parents would drive street to street throughout the valley picking up trees that were left for scout pick-up at the curb. In 1999, Sudden Valley management asked that this activity be restricted to picking up trees from a central location. They no longer wanted the youth going door to door. Older Lane became the drop site for the Sudden Valley trees. Since changing to the Older Lane drop site, the scouts have continued to pick up over 1,000 trees from Sudden Valley residents each year. The donations that once accompanied the trees when picked up at curb side have all but dried up. The troop and pack no longer collect the funds necessary to support their operation and, in fact, lose money if you factor in the cost of disposal, fuel and man power. Before moving to Sudden Valley area residents may have been accustomed to being able to put their tree at curb side and have their local trash company dispose of it. In Bellingham, the waste disposal company charges for curb side disposal of Christmas trees at a cost of $5.75 per every three feet of tree. Gone are the days when the scouts could just burn the discarded trees to dispose of Boy Scouts Troop 19 and Cub Scouts Pack 19 will dispose of Christmas trees as fundraiser for the group. them. Environmental concerns have moved us to a better, environmentally friendly approach. The scouts collect the trees and have them chipped. The chips are recycled by donating them to Bellingham Parks and Recreation for use in our neighborhood parks. In an effort to gain community support and understanding of this activity, the local scouts will be changing the locale of the Christmas tree pickup this year. The event will be held at the Sudden Valley Mall next to ReMax on Saturday, Jan. 5 from 7 to 10 a.m. Drop off times are only Friday, Jan. 4, from 3 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 5 from 7 to 10 a.m. Donation envelopes will be available at the drop location, the Sudden Valley administration office and other supportive Sudden Valley businesses. As a reminder, donations from this service event greatly assist the operation of the scouting program in our community. Without these donations, Troop 19 and Pack 19 could not provide the quality experience the boys deserve. For more information on the Christmas tree disposal, please call Ward Naf at 303- 6671.
